The bad MN team has returned. Playing without any passion and little energy. SeLA is more fun to watch right now. This I don't understand: MN hit about .300 and had a kill % of about .400 their serves often dove just over the net, or in a few cases, grazed the top and SLU was not in system all that much they had over 20 blocks in 3 sets SLU had a trio of hitters who were banging away, often to good effect. Both Wookie and Wenaas were taking hard swings, TayLa not so much. Shaff was quite 'offense'-minded and had a handful? of kills without error. Shaff's middle connection and timing with Booth on the slide were not sharp. My impression is that MN put in a workmanlike performance with good passing

I thought the team played well. Not as much energy but they played loose and confident. They were never rattled.

It wasn't their finest effort and they will need to play a lot more error free tomorrow night. At least SLU made them play some scrappy points, which we know UNI will do tomorrow. They had 10 attack errors, 4 SE and 1 RE in 3 sets. Yes, too many and many of them unforced, not to mention some missed connections and otherwise sloppy play that won't cut it against UNI.

I thought Minn played well. SE Louisiana played much better than its Pablo ranking would suggest it would play. Congrats to them.

It was a half effort kind of night. When you know the competition isn't going to be super great you can tend to not go full in. 🤷 We didn't look bad, just not our full effort we saw last week. We'll see what happens with UNI. I'd say more like half intensity rather than half effort. Normal humans can't be at 100% intensity every night--especially not college age humans. Good job taking care of business gophs; let's step it up a bit tonight and dispose of UNI.

Minnesota played fine. Timing was off here and there. SE Louisiana played aggressive, high quality volleyball. It's a good sign for the sport that a lot of these smaller schools aren't getting thrashed in the first round anymore.

Good win, not great but they had a job to do and got it done. It’s tough to play a team so much smaller, not as physical and that plays a slower offense than what you’re used to. Timing is a major adjustment and I think that’s where a lot of errors came from. MN seems to always struggle playing opponents like that…. But I’d rather have them struggle a little playing their normal game than slink down into a slower rhythm with lazy swings. I actually laughed a few times when landfair was trying to hit off the top of the block, like girl… you’re 6’5”, SLU’s block is non existent to you!
SLU played their hearts out too, you could tell they were excited to just be there and play in front of a big crowd. Those first few digs their libero had they went crazy for and it was fun to watch their bench go nuts for everything. Congrats to them for making the tournament for the first time!

I thought the gophers played one of the scrappiest matches I have seen this season. They just didn’t want any ball to touch the floor at their side. Glad to see Wenaas played with so much confidence at the RS- she just hit the ball so hard!

Minnesota is making their 27th NCAA tournament appearance and 8th consecutive. The Golden Gophers are 197-117 (.627) in sets played, finishing Runner Up in 2004; 5 Final Fours (2003, 2009, 2015, 2016, 2019); 3 Elite Eights (2006, 2012, 2021); 11 Sweet Sixteens (1989, 1993, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2017, 2018, 2020-21 Spring). Southeastern Louisiana is making their first NCAA tournament appearance. Still need to hang an elite 8 banner from last year (or add to one or otherwise rearrange all those banners up there). Hopefully the banner problem is doubled soon though. We can rest easy now, as I saw the Elite 8 teams have been moved to one banner now.

I thought Minn played well. SE Louisiana played much better than its Pablo ranking would suggest it would play. Congrats to them. For sure, SE Louisiana put up a lot more of a fight than I expected, and they refused to just roll over, like many past first round opponents. Most of the top seeds had much easier times with their AQ teams and were able to get bench players in quite a bit. That might have been nice for the Gophers, but may also work in their favor to have a scrappy first match, since tonight will be even scrappier.
