Was it 45 days in the winter and then 15 days in the spring? In any case the article says it moved from 45 to 30 days in the winter for football, but didn’t really get into it for other sports. This is correct. It was 45 starting with selection Sunday then 15 days in May. I assume volleyball will follow football’s lead and make it 30 days starting selection Sunday and 15 in May. I still don’t understand this rule. If somebody decides they want to transfer in February, what is the benefit of making them wait until May to enter the portal? It’s for the coaches. It’s a football rule. In volleyball it’s not that big of a deal because the roster sizes aren’t as big. But in football it makes it slightly more manageable, both in terms of retaining talent that might be disgruntled, along with acquiring talent from other teams. It also lowers the overall numbers by limiting when players can enter the portal. I’m with you, though. I’d rather it be a year long thing.

But it’s really from a time management perspective for coaching staffs more than anything else.

But it’s really from a time management perspective for coaching staffs more than anything else. For volleyball at least, it is definitively not. The portal window is at the beginning of May, when coaches used to basically take a month off because it was a quiet period and athletes aren't on campus.

The portal window is at the beginning of May, when coaches used to basically take a month off because it was a quiet period and athletes aren't on campus. Like I said before, it’s football based. There is literally no time off in football any more, but the windows help with roster management. I don’t have any insight into the other sports, other than they’re following football’s lead so there’s consistency across sports. And I don’t know why that would be a priority. But football is driving the bus on portal windows and now limiting them. I wouldn’t be surprised to see it limited further in the future to two 15 day windows.

Reads as 45 days per calendar year. 30 in the fall, 15 in the spring. They wanted to cut to 30 days total for the year.
