I really feel bad for the coaches at Illinois. Trying to recruit for a great player to become an Illini is a lot more challenging than colleges that have nicer facilities. Unfortunately young women want to play somewhere that offers nice facilities. I remember seeing a Tik Tok of a Penn State player where she made a video about how old/outdated Huff Hall was. That to me is just embarrassing. The facilities have to get better or else no great recruit will be picking Illinois.

Hambly had no problem recruiting at Illinois. That was before new facilities or facility upgrades all over the place. Why do you think a new wrestling facility was recently announced?

Wenaas did a tiktok B1G Gym review for all the away matches this past season and yeah...the Illinois locker room footage was sad.

This is something we are all painfully aware of and unfortunately, there is no indication that upgrades are imminent.

I was actually encouraged by the wrestling facility announcement. Then I read ground will not be broken until 2024 and it will not be ready until late 2025. I’m afraid we are in for a long wait for improved volleyball facilities.

I’m afraid we are in for a long wait for improved volleyball facilities. Most of the new B1G volleyball facilities are dual use with wrestling….. Why couldn’t that be done in Champaign? Edit: ok, the wrestling facility is just for training, and $10m of the $14m was from donations. (And 1.4m is going to improve the parking lot for hoops:) Not exactly a gaudy show of support for Olympic sports from the athletic dept. The Cavelli Center at OSU was $50m which is probably $100m in todays cost, so maybe when the new TV deal kicks in….

With Kennedy coming back - looks like we have one open scholie to give. I vote for an OH to shore up the pins.

The cost of the Covelli Center was inflated because tOSU had to replace displaced housing, as best as I can understand, which pushed the cost up close to an additional $20M. It also does a lot more than simply serve as a facility for volleyball, including non-sports events. Iowa is paired with hockey on an ice sheet which I personally would like to avoid. Indiana is more comparable for a lot less than the cost of the Covelli Center, although it is smaller than i think we need.
Most of the new athletic facilities at UIUC have been primarily financed by private donations, which may be the reason it will be a year before the wrestling training center even breaks ground. I don’t know how much of the private money has been from fans of a particular sport or if they were donors steered to the designated facility by the athletic department. When I played, admittedly a long time ago, the folks I played with or who followed volleyball were pretty close to indigent. I don’t know many deep-pocket volleyball fans.
Is there a place/need in Champaign Urbana for an entertainment venue for 5000 as opposed to the State Farm Center?

A volleyball, net, & 2 poles were all that was needed. Very few volleyballers have moved onto becoming multi-millionaires. If I ever hit the lottery, I’d donate to build an on-campus facility. Replace the old Kenney Gym, perhaps?

Ah — men’s open tournaments, all in one day, with simultaneous warmups. Most teams spent more effort hitting into the opponent’s hitting line and straight down on the setter, depending on the other teams setter for a warning that a middle was coming.

Like Barnes and Gregus, I too am excited for the spring season. Brooke at setter and first chance to see Stephenson, Bohm, May, Barry, and de Boer. Last year they didn't release a schedule until mid-February- would be cool if this tweet suggests an earlier schedule release!
