In the future, it would be great to have Bartsch and Poulter on our staff. I can dream, can't I? Great players do not always make great coaches. We already have on staff an assistant coach, Krista (Vansant) Hendrickson, a proven great player who has also established herself to be a great coach and recruiter. From her bio on the Illinois volleyball website, "As an outside hitter, the former Krista Vansant left UW (U of Washington) as the most decorated volleyball player ever to wear the purple and gold. In 2013, she became the first Husky to claim the American Volleyball Coaches Association National Player of the Year award, while also earning ESPNW National Player of the Year recognition as a senior in 2014. In the 2013-14 season and 2014-15 season she earned the Honda Sports Award, given to the best collegiate volleyball player. The Huskies retired her No. 16 jersey during the 2017 season". For those who are old Illini fans like me will remember Illini middle Mary (Eggers} Tendler won the Honda Award in 1988. She has been the head coach at Elon University for over 20 years. Here are Krista's words taken from the U of Illinois volleyball site: "I would like to thank Chris Tamas, Dr. Breanna Robinson and Josh Whitman for the opportunity to join Illinois volleyball," said Hendrickson. "I am both humbled and honored to become a member of a very accomplished staff and continue to build on the success of this program. Developing and cultivating an exceptional student-athlete experience has always been a priority of mine and Illinois Athletics shares these same values. I appreciate the tradition of success on a national stage, and I am looking forward to helping pursue championships. I am excited to build on the foundation of this storied program and eager to begin working as a part of the Fighting Illini family. I-L-L!" I have great hopes for what Coach Hendrickson can accomplish while here at Illinois.

Kordes, Flynn Oldenburg, Miller, Kniffen, Lesserman, Connors, Monroy, Mansfield, Lindsay, Reed, Reft and others have all moved on (and this is just within the past 20 years). Bartsch has coaching experience and would almost certainly want to coach at Illinois. Poulter may or not have an interest in coaching, but has the personality and leadership requirements to become a good coach.

Considering how badly Poulter injured her knee, I hope she has a long playing career and is not available to coach at Illinois for a long, long time. When she is finally able to coach I look forward to her coaching here.

2 scholarship DSs at one time is a lot. I doubt we would bring in a third scholarship DS until after Barnes has finished her eligibility.

Also, at the higher levels there is very little relationship between where a player lives and the club they play for.

From her perspective that makes a lot more sense than Illinois, as much as we need backup.

For one thing, for better or worse, the players she recruited to Indiana last season may have saved Steve Aird's job.

For one thing, for better or worse, the players she recruited to Indiana last season may have saved Steve Aird's job. Aird did not recruit those players? Hendrickson came to Illinois following four successful seasons as an assistant coach at Indiana after joining the Hoosiers staff in January of 2018. She was the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.

The Aird/Hendrickson recruits vaulted Indiana to 8th in BIG (9-11, season record 16-16). Well, they beat us and are a monumental improvement over historical Indiana volleyball. BTW, a new arena didn’t hurt them either.

The Aird/Hendrickson recruits vaulted Indiana to 8th in BIG (9-11, season record 16-16). I believe the recruits Hendrickson attracted to Indiana were not the problem. I believe it was (is?) Aird's coaching that was the problem. It all seemed to come to a head at some point. I will share this article from the Indiana Daily Student newspaper from August 25th, 2022. www.idsnews.com/article/2022/08/indianas-volleyball-season-friday-unanswered-questions-steve-airdThe article begins: "Over three months ago, the Indiana Daily Student published an investigation on Indiana volleyball head coach Steve Aird, detailing a program built around punishment, rife with mental abuse and where players say mental health concerns were regularly dismissed. Ahead of Indiana’s season opener Friday and despite four of IU's volleyball players speaking out anonymously, Indiana Athletics has not publicized any statement or announced any disciplinary action against Aird."
