Looks like they ran a 6-2 in one of the latter sets with May setting.

Does May jump well enough to block?

Does May jump well enough to block? Haven't ever seen Bianca go through pregame blocking lines.

The only info I have on the match is that Illinois played very well winning the first three games. Then they played a fourth where Tamas mixed and matched and they lost that game. No info on specific individuals.
I don’t think they have the second setter to be able to run a 6-2 but they would love to figure out a way to get some swings for Mosher. The transfer portal setter they hoped for didn’t materialize.

In February Maya Imoto-Eakin, a setter from Hawaii, “signed” with the Illini and was announced by Tamas. Does that mean she will be on scholarship? I thought Tamas couldn’t comment on walk-ons until they actually enrolled. If she is on scholarship how many open scholarships do we still have? At 5’9” is she big enough to run a 5-1?

I just now noticed Abby's name in VolleyballMag.com's dream team of the week. Sounds like she'll be a huge signing wherever she lands- would love for her to choose Illinois! Have to imagine Tamas is looking for a true OH in the 2025 class. If we have good upcoming season, it will give a big boost to recruiting. The 2018 final four appearance didn’t seem to have a great impact on Illinois’ recruiting. 💁♀️

Really glad to get to see the Illini one more time before the fall! Quite a few fans packed into the Mother McAuley gym today, fans from both programs. Notre Dame won the first set in deuce at 27-25, then the Illini rebounded and kinda dominated the final three sets. It looked like Rockwell wanted to limit the fourth set to fifteen, which they ended up playing to. Game Notes- Everyone on the roster dressed and saw some game time
- Brooke ran a 5-1 all four sets
- Barnes liberoed all four sets
- Brooke, Kennedy, Raina, Burbage, Barnes, Barry, and de Boer played in every set
- Bohm played the first two sets and Bingham played the second two
- When the Illini were running away with Set 3, Stephenson came in for de Boer and May came in to play the back row for Burbage
Observations
The first scrimmage against EIU featured basically an even distribution of playing time throughout the whole roster but this final spring scrimmage against Notre Dame felt more like a preview of the lineup Tamas would play if the season started today.
Burbage had a nice match. She played six rotations for the first two sets and most of Set 3 until subbing out for May when the Illini were way ahead. Didn't pass at all but had maybe three or four nice back row attacks on the D ball. Serve looked really good- a lot of pace and was landing them in. Mixed in some crafty tips to good effect, along with some aggressive swings.
Brooke ran a really varied offense today. She's not easy to predict and seems willing to fling the ball just about anywhere. A great example of this was a slide set to Kennedy in transition from well left of center. Willing to push those "31" sets to the MB from the 3 meter line. Also not at all shy about attacking on two. Seems to be growing into her leadership role on the team.
Barry's a huge addition to this team. Had really good ball control today in both passing and digging to target. Had at least one or two long service runs, too. Would've loved to see her get set out of the back row, but there's a lot of time for them to maybe mix that in before August. No way Lily redshirts this fall- she's a starter, even if Vanessa Pan also starts. Need that tenacity on the court.
I thought Barnes had a great match. Several digs and consistently good passing. The team floor defense today was really good and Barnes was at the center of it. Lot of opportunities to transition. Excited to see this improved back row develop this fall.
Bohm has really impressed me with her block timing and athleticism. Was in on several blocks. She also put down like a handful of overpasses/overdigs today. She didn't get set much today but had a good match despite that.
Bingham had a fine match too- what stood out to me was that the tempo of her attacks is really quick. I don't know if it's a function of having a good connection with Brooke but Sarah gets on the ball quick on her attacks. It's gonna be a battle to see who gets that second middle slot. I think Cari is a stronger blocker, quicker to close the block, and if I were Tamas, I'd prioritize defense and give Bohm the start at the second middle. Would love to get those good block touches and make life a little easier for our back row D.
Taylor didn't get a ton of sets today and wasn't in the middle of the action to the degree that she was against EIU. She had some nice swings and was in on a few blocks. She's definitely the frontrunner to start as our second OH. She played three rotations and subbed out for Barry to serve and play the back row.
Stephenson and May saw limited action today but I thought each of them had some nice passes, especially impressive for May to be developing that skill as a trained setter. There was one rotation when Brooke was front right that May stepped in (by design) to play the second ball and she may have set Brooke- I don't remember for sure. An interesting wrinkle.
Kennedy and Raina are both in midseason form. Raina was especially dominant, just blasting balls and really dialed in serve.
Now the long spring and summer until we get to see the squad in action again. Thankfully, the portal opens up again in a month and really hope we get another pin hitter. Then 2025's start signing like a month after the portal window. Looking forward to following it all and can't wait to see the 2023 Illini compete for real!
