I think John Cook, Craig Skinner, or anyone else paid in that range would be expected to make more than 1 Sweet 16 in a four-year span, regardless of circumstances. To disregard Illinois's injuries for the sake of standing by your post is dishonest, but hey whatever. And it's probably telling that you didn't answer the Ulmer hypothetical- the answer is that he wouldn't be on the hot seat if Oregon had the equivalent injuries and missed the tourney. I wouldn't expect an Oregon fan to be keeping close tabs on Illinois injuries and medical retirements. And I'm not some fervent Tamas defender either. I'll put it this way: even with the six other players that were injured at times this season, if Jessica Nunge (starting OH) hadn't missed all those conference games and Illinois still missed the tournament, I'd be among the people saying that Tamas would be on the hot seat. But I doubt you're interested in that additional context. I'm not saying Tamas should be on the hot seat. I'm saying it would be stupid for Tamas to leave a Top 10-or-so paying job that will allow him to win two tourney matches over four seasons and still leave him with job security; there is no place he could go to that would be OK with that ROI.

I guess I misinterpreted your post as suggesting he should be on the hot seat. I tend to get defensive if I feel like there's unwarranted criticism. I'm sorry for misinterpreting and escalating things.

Tamas hasn't shown ability to be a great recruiter so I'd be cool if he left knowing damn well Whitman would get another top-notch Coach. Blaming injuries on the struggles this season is weak. Plenty of time to get a replacement for Ellie. There were 5 MBs on this team he recruited. The passing was terrible, and his one DS is a worse passer than most the hitters. Team was healthy when they lost to Indiana and Northwestern who are also out recruiting him.

I realize this is more of an aside to the point of your comment but it's context regardless: No one who pays close attention to Illinois volleyball would think he's on the hot seat. Illinois made the Sweet 16 last year. This year they lost two players to medical retirement and had seven other players who missed matches because of injury. Despite all those injuries, they still managed to finish in 7th place in the conference out of 14. The six teams that finished above them in conference all made the tournament. I'm just saying, he's one of the what - 10? - highest paid coaches in the country and has won 2 tourney matches in the past four seasons (not making it twice). The expectations to compensation ratio has to be unbeatable. You're conveniently leaving out his results the first two years. He's been there a total of 6 years. They've made the playoffs 4 of those years, the Sweet Sixteen on 2 of those 4 times, and the Final Four once. One of the years they didn't make it was the COVID year, when even Stanford didn't make the playoffs. That's definitely NOT a "hot seat" kind of record.

MN coaching job went to Keegan Cook of WA. Tamas just signed and extension, they have built roots in Champaign. He isn't going anywhere. Missing two or 3 of your projected starters is huge. No fault of his own.
We do need to step up our recruiting. I wasnt a fan of Hambly & his coaching but he could recruit. We always got a Top 10 class. Hopefully Krista can work some magic in the transfer portal.
Go ILLINI!

here is what i’ll say after reading the last few posts about Tamas (i.e. recruiting, passing, injuries, etc). What I truly admire about Chris is the culture that he’s building in Champaign amongst the locker room and program…he has worked hard to implement the “FamILLy” type of mindset, which is great to see.
My gripes with this program and where it’s been the last few years comes down to some of the coaching replacements since the Final Four run, the “injuries excuse,” the lack of team promotion/visibility on social media (compared to other B1G programs and Illini Programs), and the recruiting.
Has our passing looked atrocious the last few seasons with little improvement? Yes. Should it solely be placed on the recruiting? No. Eli is in charge of the passing/defensive schemes and making sure our “littles” are aggressive on every touch. Barnes did improve as the season went on, but was still inconsistent and asked to take up a big chunk of court in her “freshman” campaign as libero. As the best passer on our team, she should step up and take up as much court as she can, but she didn’t have much help on SR and Defense from our Pins/Subs.
The injuries excuse i will not allow. Yes that sucks but injuries can and do happen…but Mosher stepped up big when she had to, why couldn’t some of those who where were actually recruited as pins do the same? That takes me into recruiting/coaching changes. Yes Alfie and Rashinda were big shoes to fill, but It’s on Tamas to still lead recruiting efforts (especially coming from Nebraska) and getting the best possible staff. I’m not taking a dump on Eli or Krista but i do hope they can show some aggression this off season to get the team where we need it to be…both on the player and coaching front. If our passing does not get better, i would hope Chris looks to Eli and see what’s going on.
Lastly the lack of promotion/social media presence. I’m not sure who’s running our Social accounts, but there is very little buzz around this team which doesn’t help bring in the fan base to pack Huff. The Spike Squad was known as one of the best student sections in the B1G and were highlighted a ton by our social team back in the day…now? it’s very sporadic or non existent. It just stinks that we can’t give this program the spotlight it should be getting, especially for being one of the more consistently successful programs at Illinois (before the rebuild of MBB and IL FB came around). Yes, revenue sports will get more attention, but give this team the backing it should so they can feel appreciated.
Rant over!
