Man... the years and memories across all UH teams and Hawaii sports broadcasting. Been following UH for over half of my life and Jim Leahey was always a part of the Fall starting with Wahine volleyball and the spring ending with Rainbow Warrior baseball.
"RE-MEMBER THIS!! REEEEE-MEMBER THIS!!"
"THIS IS BETTER THAN STATEHOOD!!"
Two of the most iconic Jim Leahey lines.

I wonder why the two new transfers haven’t posted anything on their socials yet. Kinda weird but at least UH posted so that’s all that matters.

Maybe there was an emphasis on not having a bunch of flair and social media nonsense like a lot of other athletes seem to do and just come to your new program, ready to work hard.

Removing posts overtime is a thing, and I suppose some just don't need all the hoopla. I don't mind, UH is in their bio's, UH released a presser, and the Star Advertiser had articles with quotes from both.

I can see them posting when spring practices were to start and share information with her family and friends on the mainland but as for right now....nothing to really post. I've seen both Mandi and Jacyn hanging with Caylen Alexander at the men's games.

Jim Leahey, voice of Hawaii sports for nearly 60 years, diesBy Dave Reardon 1/30/22, Honolulu Star-Advertiser DENNIS ODA / 2003 Jim Leahey and his son, Kanoa, talked about how they started in sports broadcasting while having breakfast at Big City Diner.
CINDY ELLEN RUSSELL / 2017 University of Hawaii Circle of Honor inductee Jim Leahey at the Willows Restaurant.Excerpt: Jim Leahey, an eloquent and ever-present voice synonymous with Hawaii sportscasting for nearly 60 years, died this morning after a long illness. The family released a statement saying, “Today we lost the patriarch of our family. A man known by his supreme talents for storytelling, an unrelenting passion for Hawaii and the teams and athletes that represent it, and a lifelong love for the craft of sports broadcasting. Jim Leahey was also a loyal and loving husband, father and grandfather, who placed his family and his faith above all. “He took tremendous pride in supplying the narration for some of the University of Hawaii’s greatest athletic achievements, and cherished seeing the community come together, united, to root for the home team. We thank everyone for their well wishes and support at this mournful time. “As our dad would always say to close his broadcasts, ‘malama pono kekahi i kekahi.’” Full story: www.staradvertiser.com/2023/01/30/sports/sports-breaking/jim-leahey-voice-of-hawaii-sports-for-nearly-60-years-dies/

R.I.A Jim Leahey, colleague, friend and ‘Cuz’Cindy Luis January 30, 2023 Excerpt: The sports media community was a lot tighter back in the 80s when I was first hired by the Star-Bulletin. The sports staffs of the papers, radio and the up-and-coming TV types often socialized. As we like to say, “Back in the Day” …. The first time I met Jim Leahey was in October 1981 during the week UH football was playing UNLV (homecoming). UH SID Eddie Inouye would bring the head football coach (and SID) to Columbia Inn to meet with the Hawai’i media. On that particular occasion, Star-Bulletin sports editor Bill Kwon thought it was a great idea to bring me along to the luncheon and get introduced to the rest of the local sports media peeps. He introduced me to Ferd Lewis of the Advertiser and Leahey saying, “Hey, we got another Portagee on the staff.” (the SB also had Paul Carvalho). So Jim and Ferd and I eventually got together at the end of the table to talk. Ended up Leahey’s grandmother was a Luis from Madeira (where my grandparents were from) and Ferd’s name originally was Luis but changed to Lewis when his family came from the Azores. Kwon came over and said, “Typical Portagee. You’re going to sit around for an hour to talk about who you might be related to and people you don’t know but might.” But it is so true. ... I am blessed to have such great memories of Jim. I regret we won’t make more. Rest in Aloha, Cuz. Rest in Amar, Padent. Jim Leahey was an incredible person and broadcaster. His voice seemed to capture and pull viewers/listeners in. He touched my life and the lives of many others. To put quite simply, his voice was anointed by God. Rest in the awe-inspiring love of the Almighty, Jim. 💚💚💚

Legendary Hawaii sportscaster Jim Leahey dies at 80By Brian McInnis Jan. 30, 2023, Spectrum News Jim Leahey, right, with son Kanoa at his retirement party in August 2018. (Photo courtesy of Office of the Mayor)Excerpt: HONOLULU — Legendary sportscaster Jim Leahey, who was the voice of University of Hawaii sports for decades, died early Monday morning, his family said. He was 80. Leahey, who retired in 2018, had battled health issues in recent months. His instantly recognizable voice was the soundtrack to many of the biggest moments in UH sports history on both radio and television, spanning thousands of games. He called much of the Rainbow Warrior football team’s unbeaten 2007 regular season and its cherished victories over BYU in 1989 and 1990. He had some memorable calls of buzzer-beaters such as his “How sweet it is!” for Tes Whitlock’s basketball winner over the Cougars in 1995. Leahey was inducted into the UH Sports Circle of Honor in 2016. He won Hawaii Sportscaster of the Year 19 times. A former schoolteacher, he would often summon and emphasize uncommon, multisyllable words in the flow of a game. Leahey, the son of legendary local sportscaster, Chuck Leahey, transferred his passion to a third generation. His son, Kanoa, is now the primary play-by-play voice of UH sports for Spectrum Sports. Guys passing by my dorm room would hear my TV and ask "Who is that guy? He's awesome!" I think part of what made his TV broadcasts so great was that he was also doing a radio simulcast, so the play by play was extremely detailed and there was no "dead air" like there would be in most TV broadcasts. In his prime, his mind and mouth were both moving a mile a minute.

So of course that meant going to many Wahine games (this was in the Kim and Lily era) and he made it so exciting to watch on TV that sometimes I would prefer to stay home! Just an amazing talent
