It beat out Jacksonville the largest city in Florida? Interesting, but hopefully will have a team here in Florida. that's just for media market size. Grand Rapids area is the #41 sized media market in the USA. Jacksonville (43), Oklahoma City (44), Louisville (49), New Orleans (50), Memphis (51) were the cities/markets below them. Thanks for breaking it down. Jacksonville would support a professional team. Hell, I would do marketing for free if they got a team. Lol

It beat out Jacksonville the largest city in Florida? Interesting, but hopefully will have a team here in Florida. In Lee's article link, it states they will take 6 to 10 teams, FULLY funded. Not like past financial failures. I believe the thinking is like my thoughts are ratings, not attendance, will carry this league. So Jacksonville is probably a good site with proper ownership funding. My thoughts are places that do not have alot of other pro sport competition where VB interest is high. e.g. Omaha, Louisville and the like. Not NY, Boston, Chi or LA. We'll see when they're announced one at a time. good marketing than all franchises at once. creates anticipation Yeah, I saw that but wasn’t clear what made them stand out. Avid broke it down so I understand it better.

The Grand Rapids Force was one of the four teams in the United States Professional Volleyball League (USPV) that lasted only one year in 2002. There was talk that a major factor in the failure of that league was that they started up with too little funding, so perhaps things will be different this time. I saw the Force play once in Grand Rapids. They were in a much smaller facility than Van Andel Arena, giving it pretty much a minor-league feel which didn't really help the situation.

As a Michigander I want nothing to do with any DeVoses. This is disappointing. Cry about it, you should be more concerned about your governor being a joke than someone who is pushing money into a sport we all desperately want to be professionally relevant domestically.

That's his brother's wife. This guy doesn't appear to be that political, at least per his wikipedia bio. He's made 3 political campaign donations, all to Republicans, one as recently as June. Lower profile than other family members, but it's also hard to say anything, it's super easy for him to donate through his family's PAC. People thought Kelly Loeffler was a super progressive Republican until she wasn't. If this were my local team, no way I would support it (I realize there's far more terrible owners than him in the sports world though) No Politics!!

I don't see an introduction thread but I've joined the board because I live in the Grand Rapids area and am excited about the new league. Having been a season ticket holder of the Arena Football team DeVos owned I was and am happy to support the team.

Ok. So, the name the team contest is officially closed for entries. If anyone wants to share what they entered, feel free. I guess the winner will be notified on the 15th but won't be announced until April.
My suggestions: Grand Rapids Galaxy - I like alliteration in sports names and I always liked the marketing of the Frankfurt Galaxy of NFL Europe. We also have a local historical astronaut, Roger B Chafee who has a planitaruim and street named after him here.
Grand Rapids Force - A nod to the first Pro Volleyball team here in GR.
West Michigan Wave - A nod to the Grand River that runs through downtown and a reference to the River Reclamation Project that aims to restore the white water too it.
One name I would have suggested if we could of done more than three was the "Beer City Bier Frauen": A nod to our title of 'Beer City USA' and the heavy population of people with Dutch Heritage. I felt it too much of a long shot so I entered the other 3 instead.
Names suggested by various local media personalities include:
Grand Rapids Steelheads: a breed of fish native to the Grand River.
Grand Rapids Hops: A nod to "Beer City" and to the jumping that will happen during games.
616 Spikers: 616 being the area code.

I do too!! I went to a match with them against the Arizona Blaze! Arizona Blaze was only in town one year…😩 We’re you at the match when the R1 went into labor? That was me 🙂. Wait, you were on the stand as an R1, went into labor, and then FINISHED THE GAME before going to the hospital? Thats the most #bossbabe thing I have ever heard.

Grand Rapids...eh, ok then. They have a solid volleyball community with D3 national powers Hope and Calvin as the focus.

Thats the most #bossbabe thing I have ever heard. It’s not like my water broke, I just started having contractions! But yes, I finished the match. Contractions were like 15 minutes apart. I knew I had plenty of time!
