just curious........could Mendelson decide to concentrate on vb and get a vb schollie? just an observation from afar, but, just didn't seem she was really focused later in the season. wasn't really getting a whole lot of minutes. plus, not really sure the coaches have the ability to really develop post players.

I think all 12 Volleyball scholarships are filled this coming season, and it doesn't look good for the next either without a rash of transfers.

I'm not advocating or cheering for them, but all programs seem subject to transfers these days, NE is no exception.

With no seniors this season, three openings would be needed in order for Mendelson to be on a Volleyball scholarship. I guess then it comes down to the definition of rash.

I’m sure Cook has promised those two 2024 freshman a scholarship, so he must be banking on showing two girls the door after this season?

Scholarship, NIL, etc. etc. if people want more PT and transfer, that’s part of life. There are many ways to keep anyone around who wants to be.

Akana was told her scholarship wasn't being renewed for this year and we made the choice to keep a young player over giving Caffey another year. It's the facts of life in big time college Vball, all the players know that going in, that's why the portal is a good thing. That said, I don't necessarily think there's anything wrong with over committing a little bit--99% of the time someone always gets injured/leaves by natural attrition anyway.

That said, I don't necessarily think there's anything wrong with over committing a little bit--99% of the time someone always gets injured/leaves by natural attrition anyway. This isn't correct. Akana didn't have a scholarship the previous year. For whatever reason, she had an expectation she would have one the next year. That didn't come through. She chose to transfer to somewhere that did have a scholarship for her. John Cook absolutely had a scholarship available for Caffey. He didn't use it on her because the NCAA told him if he did Nebraska would be considered to be over scholarship in the spring of 2022 - when Caffey didn't have a scholarship - and therefore would be punished over the next two years by having a scholarship withdrawn. That was too high a penalty to pay. This wouldn't have been the case if he hadn't issued Caffey's scholarship to someone else following her December graduation, but he didn't understand this move would have the consequences it did. The problem is the NCAA allows programs to issue the scholarship of a graduating student athlete from the fall semester to a new student in the spring semester. However, the assumption is they're moving on from the program. If you give the scholarship of a player in a full scholarship sport to someone else, you can't bring them on the next semester. In other words, you can't choose to have a player on scholarship in the fall, not on scholarship in the spring, then on scholarship again in the fall. The problems in these situations from my perspective wasn't how Cook conducted their scholarships. If he didn't want to issue a scholarship to Akana, so be it. If he didn't want to be penalized by the NCAA for giving Caffey a scholarship in the fall, even after going through all the effort to navigate getting a waiver from the NCAA for her 6th year of eligibility, that's understandable. It's the public narratives he chose to pursue, making it seem like the only reason Akana left was because she wanted to be the starting libero, and that wasn't possible at Nebraska. Or throwing Caffey under the bus by lying about her situation at the Big 10 media days, only to be forced to offer a correction afterwards. But it's not right to say he opened up scholarships by forcing those two players out of the program. Rylee Gray, on the other hand....

Dear god, can we not go down the Akana/Caffey road again. If it’s not cook, Akana of Caffey, no one’s opinion is adding anything. That's fine, we can go further back. Back in the days before the B1G required 4-year scholarships for fall freshmen signees. We (as well as a lot of other program) played with scholarship math a lot. There were many "facts of life" discussions that were had with players. Again, I don't think there's anything wrong with this. Players an transfer if they aren't happy and coaches can try and put together the best teams possible. No one is a saint.
