Not so sure Big Johnson got robbed. I read where Dargan was MVP of the Pacific Tournament. She is one of the best setters in the country. Who did Big Johnson get all of her kills against? Sometimes the competition is is crucial to the formula. If Big Johnson is for real - which I think she is - she will have plenty more chances at the award. Glad to see the Big Ten is offering a defensive POW this year. Congrats to Kaleena Walters and Renata Dargan.

MSU had a pretty weak weekend of competition but Purdue wasn't much better. MSU swept Wichita State who received votes in the preseason poll. They also played Ball State and South Florida, not really challenging teams. Purdue played Dayton and Pacific, along with Bradley and Saint Louis. The competition for both teams is more or less even.
Not that Dargan didn't have a good week though.

I think Walters is every bit as good as Gentil. They go about their business very differently. Walters solid and understated, Gentil sensational and dramatic. Gentil has won more honors by drawing alot of attention to herself, by how she plays. I'm not "dissing" Gentil, she is terrific, I just think she is pretty far over the top.

"I'm not dissing Gentil" dorothy says, as she disses Gentil...
Hmmm. I wonder why dorothy thinks Walters is "every bit as good"...
You can talk about her "style of play" all you want, but there's a reason why she was first team AA. And this is what I objected to: You don't like her style _and_ it colors your opinion of her play.

Ruffda has lost all of his credibility with me whenever he discusses Minnesota Volleyball. He is wearing maroon colored glasses. Basically, he is Mike Hebert's puppet. It is great to be a fan, but Ruffda has gone way over the top here. I can put it on a clock how many minutes it will take before Ruffda will respond to any comment toward Minnesota that is not glowing in favor of the Gophers. Gentil is a unique and outstanding. She has been given a free rein to do whatever she wants at Minnesota. Mike will be the first to admit this. She has to be pampered and coddled. Everyone on the team has to adjust to her. I think that makes things tough on everyone, yet the team has been very successful during the past two years. This is a credit to the Gopher team that they have been able to adjust to the play and emotions of Gentil. Now, I have not been critical of Gentil, just voiced my opinion. Gentil is more talented then Walters and makes more plays, but I would prefer having Walters on my team. Good luck to both. Minnesota made a statement today with their play, but I also think Nebraska needs a break. They have dealt with one tough schedule to start play. As opposed to Minnesota's pre-conference schedule. Too bad today's match was not televised. Back to the point, Ruffda has to keep things in perspective. It appears as if he has appointed himself as the leader of the Hebert posse.

Rocket, first of all, it's free "rein". Second, it's not praise for Gentil I'm looking for, it's just I don't understand all the cheapshots.
As for a Gopher "bias", you must not be paying attention. I've always been as critical as anyone in analysing their strengths and weaknesses.
You have a player like Gentil, you use her. It's like me complaining that Nebraska uses Pavan to hit out of the backrow. Or her _teammates_ being upset that she's being used to hit out of the back row.

Unfortunately there is either one POW or co-POW's but never co-co-POW's. I didn't see this week's winners play but I did see Danielle Meyer for the Ohio State University and thought she had a legitimate shot at the award. There are probably several others who might feel robbed as well but there is still a long season ahead and the consistent players will eventually get the POW sometime.

Or whining Stacey and Ogonna were too flashy because they got so many attack attempts during their careers and were given "free rein" to hit from about anywhere on the court.
I was extremely impressed with Stacy in the regional matches last year when passes didn't get to the setter at the net it was fun watching her communicate with Marisa to change the called plays and take advantage of new mismatches because of a weaker pass.
Not taking advantage of Paula's ability to cover a lot of area on the court on both serve receive and defense would be like only setting players like Stacey and Ogonna on the left side and only when a perfect pass is made to the setter.

As for histrionics in general. I enjoy the histrionics of all the people whining about Paula's histrionics.

Congratulations to Renata and Kaleena on well deserved awards for the week!

I'm with you Ruffda--you have a player like Gentil you use her. Let's say Minn is playing someone/anyone and Gentil dos not start. You can bet that will be the topic of conversation. The whole atmosphere within the building is abuzz. When she does not play the entire match and say (for argument's sake), they lose the match, we all will know the topic again will be "because Gentil didn't play" not that one or more of the players on either team had a great match. Great players like Gentil attract attention to themselves because of their ability and their dominant affect on the outcome of the game. Coaches and players realize that and I don't expect to find ANY coach or player on her team who will complain about her. Is the saying "jealousy breeds contempt?" Suppose Gentil decided not to got to Minn this year. Which list would be longer, the list of schools doing everything they could to get her on their team or the list of those who were glad she didn't come because of her 'theatrics' on the floor?

I think Walters is every bit as good as Gentil. I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong but I think Gentil had more digs last year than Walters. However, I agree Walters is a great libero. But not as good as Paula.
