Out of curiosity, what happens to scholarships when a player redshirts? Assuming they were on a 4-year deal, does that mean they get a 5th year of scholarship too? Yes. Redshirting is not really about the scholarship per se. It’s about eligibility. The redshirt preserves a year of eligibility in the NCAA traditional scheme of 5 years to complete 4 years of eligibility. It used to be scholarships were renewed from year to year. Which always left it open that maybe they wouldn’t be renewed. Fairly recently athletes started signing agreements that give them a little more security, in that the schools are putting it in writing they will honor scholarships for a specified period of time. But as we’ve seen with Covid year players, that goes beyond the agreement between the players and the school. Same thing with 6th years of eligibility as well. In any case, scholarships for a 5th year are typically covered by an agreement between the athlete and the school, but not necessarily. As a personal example, my niece is a scholarship player with Oregon (not volleyball). They’ve told her in writing they will honor her scholarship for 5 years including her redshirt year. That’s pretty standard procedure these days. But I will say if someone is in the process of becoming a scholarship athlete it is important to get agreements in writing. A lot of it is in the documents signed as a matter of course. But it’s importaht to understand what you’re signing and what the university is obligating themselves to.

oh so you don’t think molly could use her hands? I haven’t personally seen her do it with my own two eyes. But I have seen those forearms at work and sister girl has quite the platform. she can handset in beach, so she can DEFINITELY handset in indoor

I would definitely feel more comfortable with three setters but I imagine JE has Akana in his back pocket a la Claire Hahn. Akana has good enough hands to come in a set if/when she needs to. Looking at last year's stats, the top 5 in assists (sets) for Texas were:
Saige - 1,100 Zoe - 112
Jenna - 47 Keonilei - 35 Emma - 21
And when JE went into the Devin defensive switch late in a set, Keonilei was the setter. So, it's been done already.
ewert really played THAT little??? Jesus. Would have thought Elliot could give her more time than THAT. She’s been very good overseas and was very good at Colorado

Out of 30 games the Longhorns played, she participated in 19, starting in 1. 35 sets total, which includes coming in for 1 or 2 serves a match.

She basically only came in for late set substitutions along with Kahahawai. Kahahawai would sub for SKT on the front row and Ewert would serve.
The focus was always improving SKT’s comfort within the offense and her connections with her hitters. Hard to second guess that decision given the results, but it’s true Ewert didn’t play all that much given her stature coming in. She did get a ring, however.

If you go and look at replays of some games, she was up front of the group on the "bench" getting the most fired up after a big point. She would be jumping towards the players on the court pumping her arms/fist in celebration.

I don’t mean it was an objectively wrong decision I’m just shocked she had that few assists. That’s a crazy low number. I just figured she would have had more setting time against lower ranked teams

It really is amazing how little playing time she got, but it definitely worked out alright. Also a reminder of just how much of a team player Ashley Shook was. That had to be such a disappointing situation for her, but how she handled that on and off the court was really admirable. You could never question that she loved her teammates and loved being a Longhorn. She'll always be one of my favorite players for that.

Beach sets are very short, nearly always in front and they are anal about spin so end up holding the ball longer and often deep dish it. Indoors is a quicker set (time in the hands), released much higher, deception matters and you have to push it much further both front and back where spin matters much less, but you can't hold it as long. I've seen some very good beach players not adapt well to indoor setting. Alexa Strange comes to mind.

ewert really played THAT little??? Jesus. Would have thought Elliot could give her more time than THAT. She’s been very good overseas and was very good at Colorado Obvious you didn't follow the team closely or you wouldn't have run your mouth so stupidly. Remember SKT was not the returning starter and didn't join the team the previous season until 3-4 weeks into the season. So she had relatively little game experience with the returning players in addition to the transfers. Therefore there was a need to get her as many game action reps as possible, especially with the middles (Bergmark and Caffey didn't transfer in until the summer) where the connections needed improvement until well into the season. Add to this that Ewert also didn't transfer until after the spring. Also Texas is the 2022 National Champion, so Elliott made the correct decision.

It’s just shocking that a setter of her caliber had less assists the entire season than some other teams setters that played in a 6-2 had in one game

You've earned the hostility with these type of posts about Texas over the years and yes your intent is to frame it as either a bad decision or unfair to Ewert. Go try the poor me bit somewhere else.
