I know it’s not gonna happen but ugh I wish Devin would start over Molly on the right side. I’m so grateful for everything Molly has done for us but her blocking hasn’t really improved and a third middle shouldn’t be a blocking liability. We’re not gonna have two insanely physical outsides to throw the ball up to when we’re out of system either. Devin could play as a passing opposite and free up Skinner to just attack almost every rotation, which would be devastating for opponents. It also gives us an out of system option on the right pin as well as the left. Then there’s a battle between Jenna and Devin who gets DS’d, or even both still. Based on what you've seen of her with USA volleyball in like a handful of matches? I know you mentioned Molly's blocking liabilities, but Devin has some of her own; I'm sure our coaching staff is aware of all players' liabilities. Nothing gets handed to you at Texas. If you come in and compete as a true freshman and beat out a returning upperclassman starter, you will have earned your playing time. Our coaching staff will make the personnel decisions that are best for the team based on performances in the practice gym. I've stated this before, but what hurt Devin the most last season was not enrolling at Texas for either summer session. She didn't arrive on campus until August camp. It takes a very special true freshman to show up that late and earn a starting spot a few weeks later, especially when there are already about 4 pin hitters who had been at Texas longer and played in many collegiate matches. From what I saw in last August's scrimmage, and throughout the season, Devin wasn't better than those ahead of her on the roster. It might have been strictly a lack of confidence, or the pace of the collegiate game. Lots of players make their biggest jumps of improvement during the offseason prior to their second collegiate season. Maybe Devin will fall into that category. Assuming Molly holds on to the starting Opposite spot, and Skinner and Wenaas are the starting OH's, it will be interesting to see if Devin is the first backup sub at OH or Opposite. She and Byrd could be interchangeable at both pins, but I imagine our staff will have them focusing on one position once the season gets underway.

Speaking of freshmen enrolling, who's already on campus? I saw Tomkinson post on social media to Nya Bunton (high school graduation photo) "can't wait 'til you get here". So, I'm assuming Auburn is attending summer classes at Texas (first session started June 1), but Bunton is not. I figure both will redshirt; but, those who come in weeks/months before August camp will have a better chance of contributing in the Fall.

An MBA from McCombs is no joke. She made the most of all her opportunities on the 40 acres and then some. It’s going to be so fun to see her inducted into the athletic department hall of fame. I can’t wait to see where her career takes her.

Can’t remember though she was doing her master's program while playing pro ball overseas in turkey (she spoke about it while on a podcast)...i'm not sure what she was studying for her master's...i guess it could be an old pic that lovb volleyball used & posted in their ig story...i'll try to look it up to confirm

Well, it's not like I have any special insight. I could have sworn I read where she had a special scholarship designation for obtaining her MBA after getting her undergrad degree.

I want Devin to get meaningful playing time as much as the next guy, but when the lineup settles into it’s final iteration, I just don’t see how Molly gets left off. I watched the USD match again a little while back and Molly was sublime for most of that match. 8 kills over the first two sets. Multiple of those on the left pin. Let’s be serious. I’m going to say it now, loud and proud. 2023 2nd team all American Molly Renee Phillips. You heard it here first.

This past season, did we ever see Molly get pulled (struggling) in favor of Devin? Or, did Devin come in when Molly couldn't terminate from the left pin in that one rotation? It probably did happen, but not very often. And, that's my point. Molly's consistency is her biggest asset. Now, as I stated yesterday, I do expect Devin to make huge strides her first offseason in college; she'll have every opportunity to win the starting job at Opposite. It could be just her demeanor, but I'd like to see Devin show more aggressiveness on the offensive end; perhaps that will come with more self-confidence. This wouldn't even be an issue if we simply ran a 2-setter offense . . .
