This past season, did we ever see Molly get pulled (struggling) in favor of Devin? Or, did Devin come in when Molly couldn't terminate from the left pin in that one rotation? It probably did happen, but not very often. And, that's my point. Molly's consistency is her biggest asset. Now, as I stated yesterday, I do expect Devin to make huge strides her first offseason in college; she'll have every opportunity to win the starting job at Opposite. It could be just her demeanor, but I'd like to see Devin show more aggressiveness on the offensive end; perhaps that will come with more self-confidence. This wouldn't even be an issue if we simply ran a 2-setter offense . . . i believe molly was pulled in the first kansas match in the 2nd set but je moved madi to opp & logan & mel played outside otherwise i don't recall molly being pulled from a match...or except when je was testing lineups & giving others playing time...devin is going to have a difficult time beating out molly...i get molly does not have a high vertical jump & she's not good oos but she's consistent, reliable & had one of the highest hitting percentages at the pin last season...the best player will win the the spot...i'm a fan of texas winning...jena has to be consistent at outside to keep that spot (imo hitting @ least 285)...let the battles begin this summer...also i called texas athletics yesterday about season ticket renewal they will release them in the next week or two

O’Neal, Bergmark and Singletary ain’t about to let that happen. Plus her lateral movement is sus Idk if I made this up, but didn't she like go off on Stanford in like 2019 in the middle? 😩

That was really fun. The way I recall it the big problem in those first two sets is that KU decided to defend UT's fast attack by moving their middle early to our left pin, and it was working. Moving Skinner over to the right side was part of the adjustment, but the bigger one - the way I remember it, anyway - was going to Eggleston out of the back row. I don't think she had as many back row attacks in any other match as she had in those last 3 sets against KU. While it was a 5 set match, I didn't think it was as close as that indicates. It never felt like Texas was in much trouble in those last 3 sets, mostly because KU couldn't ever score on their serve. It felt very one sided. As far as Molly Phillips in general, the first thing I want to say is thank you to uofAgrad for starting the conversation in the first place. Where, and if, Kahahawai plays a significant role this year is probably the biggest question for me this off season, in the same way that Parra's role was for me last year. Kahahawai has more upside because of her height and athleticism. I have no real doubt she's going to play a sizable role the two years after this one. But this year looks a bit iffy to me. I hope I'm wrong. I really like what she brings to the table. To me I think fans and leaders think of personnel slightly differently. As a fan, we want to see the player who shows the most potential, because the way we project it is if that potential can be realized on a consistent basis, we have a game changer. As a leader, what we want as much as anything else is consistency. For example, when I'm managing a sales team, it's all well and good to have someone who can sell ice to eskimos, but if they're manic depressive and don't show up for work half the time, that's an issue. As opposed to the person who understands it's a numbers game, and goes through their cold call list like a machine, making their quota month after month. Elliott knows what he's going to get with Phillips. She's not going to get too down. He knows what she brings in terms of temperament on the court. She's more than a solid player on the right pin. She has a lot of height. She's shown she can terminate. She's a fifth year player that her teammates look up to. And, don't forget, he just won a national championship with her as a starter all season long. That's going to be tough to replace. I'm not saying Kahahawai can't beat her out. I'm just saying it's going to be tough sledding. There's also the fact we rarely saw Kahahawai on the right side in the spring. What I saw is the staff setting up a competition between Kahahawai and Wenaas for left pin rotations behind Skinner, more so than Phillips and Kahahawai. Did someone else see something different? I'm with katn. I just want to see the best option win the position, and I feel like Elliott does a great job of allowing that over the course of a season. I'm not as depressed about the Big 12 being a dropoff in competition from non conference this next year the way I was last year. Plus, I don't think we're going to be quite the same level of juggernaut we were last year. So I feel like there's going to be quite a few more tests along the way that will help Elliott make great decisions regarding his best lineup. There are a few people who have been trying to project Phillips to the bench or Phillips to the middle for a couple of years now, but there she still is, plugging away. I don't have a problem with people speculating about a change there. That's what message boards are for, and our thread has been relatively dead compared to last year simply because we don't have even remotely close to the same level of constant drama we saw last season. So I'm Team Drama on this one. That said, I'll be more surprised if Phillips isn't the starter at the right pin for our last match of the season - whenever that ends up being - than I will be if she is filling that role. But we'll see. If another player consistently outperforms her when they get the chance, Elliott will make the change. I'm confident of that.

It's not that Molly is doing horrible as an opposite, I just would rather see Devin (a true opp) given a chance with the starters for a game... Especially a game where Molly is having a hard time terminating and it's hurting us.

My biggest complaint on Phillips is her lack of “star quality” so to speak in comparison to players like Eggleston, Skinner, O’Neal, Butler, Fields, White, etc. that we’ve grown used to at Texas. Phillips is very consistent and honestly ant times insanely impressive with her shot selection but she doesn’t jump out of the gym nor does she THUMP the ball plus i feel like she gets tooled a lot. With that being said she’s just smart. She knows how to place shots at that weird off speed she hits with and land kills. While there’s nothing wrong with that it’s just lackluster in comparison (to me). I want Texas to win at the end of the day so if she wins the starting position I’m not going to cry about it. I just feel like Kahahawai has a higher ceiling and is a more dynamic player than Phillips. If she’s consistent enough to beat out Phillips is the only question that remains to be answered imo.

my problem isn’t with Molly’s attacking. I love the surgeon. my problem is she’s a third middle that is a objectively poor pin blocker.

Geez nice backhanded compliments towards Molly! She get's the job done, she's very effective because she can attack the fast tempo back sets.

What can't she do? I wonder if she's been tapped for PVF (most likely not for PVF since she's contracted for 23/24 with Gala) or LOVB (more likely)
