I’m confused about seating and hosting regionals, and I should know this but I don’t, but everyone in here is so kind I’m sure it’s a safe space….. So, if hypothetically Texas is assigned to (let’s say) a Louisville regional and Louisville loses does the regional come to Austin or stay in the original host assignment. Seems like NCAA would want to be in a full gym of fans and if the host university loses it just won’t play well on TV. in this hypothetical situation if Louisville loses in the first or second round I'm pretty sure the regional would come to Texas

Regional hosts don’t really lose in the first two rounds in volleyball. But in softball/baseball, where they have the same hosting dynamics for their tournaments, it’s not nearly as uncommon. The highest seed left in that bracket ends up getting the opportunity to host. There are some NCAA restrictions regarding minimum attendance capacity they’d have to pass. I’ll be beyond shocked to see a regional host lose in the first two rounds. I know it’s possible. Heck, it almost happened to us against UCSB. Frankly, it would be good for the sport in certain ways if it did, although too many upsets creates a less compellng Final Four, a la men’s basketball last year.

Upsets are extremely rare in volleyball. One of the main things is that there’s no equivalent to the 3 point line, and there’s simply more talent to disburse in mbb than in volleyball. I feel like as more and more young women gravitate to volleyball that will change. Also, I’d like to see more teams like Arkansas where undersized hitters are effective in part because of their all around game. As it is the schools that dominate in talent acquisition regardless of the vector are the ones with the clear advantage come the tournament. And then the hosting exacerbates that. I’m sure we’d see a lot more upsets if the tournament was held at neutral sites like mbb, but that wouldn’t make financial sense.
