I think a lot of people expected Hill to take the sand/beach volleyball route, and it was Dunphy who encouraged her to give the National Team a try, hence, unexpected.

Mickisha Hurley (2000) was a 2x AA but played at Barry University. Nicole Davis, wasn't unknown, just awful. Kim Hill was unexpected. Hill was a top 10 recruit and 1st team AA. Not sure that qualifies as "unexpected". To me, Hill was a surprise. Highly recruited out of high school, yep. Very good career at Pepperdine, but Olympic roster good? But then she disappears from the indoor scene for like 18 months, plays beach 2012-2013, then a little more than a year later is not only on the NT, but is the MVP and a gold medalist at the world championships? I mean...

Kim Hill was a Top 10 recruit (and would probably have been Top 5 or higher if she had committed to a Top 10 program). Kim Hill was very good. She was very close to leading Pepperdine to the Final Four. What was Bartsch-Hackley ranked? I would have thought maybe Colleen Ward would have been the future NT star. Bartsch really turned it on post college. According to her bio on Illinois roster, she was selected for the junior NT and was top 50 recruit. Probably in the first half of the top 50, but it didn't specify a number.

Cook brought her in as a libero (her club position on a JO champion Mizuno Rock Star team) to replace Lara Dykstra after the latter transferred out. Yes, I read that. But his comment that everybody was recruiting her as a backup setter or a walk-on doesn't suggest anybody thought she'd be an All American, and later Olympic, libero. I don't know what article you're talking about, but John knew what he had pretty much right away, and she didn't disappoint. But I digress. Anyway, my point was that as the starting setter for a storied high school program and a standout libero on the best 18's team in the country, she was well-known to college recruiters, and Cook was so enamored that he took her off the market as soon as he could, so to speak (and she didn't give up a scholly at Hawaii just to walk on at Nebraska). However, and towards your point, I've known the family since Justine was like 5, and I certainly would not have had "Olympic gold medalist" on my JWO bingo card when she left for Lincoln as an 18-year-old kid.

The surprise with Kim Hill was more that she was able to become a very solid passer. She started at Pepperdine was an MB and later moved to Opposite, if I recall correctly. Becoming an indoor passer at outside hitter was definitely not expected.

Lindsey Berg was never an All-American.

Justine Wong-Orantes was fairly well known on the beach, but I don't think she was a ranked indoor recruit coming into college, was she? I think she was a walk-on at Nebraska. JWO was very much a known quantity as an indoor prep at Los Alamitos/Mizuno, and was not a walk on. She had other full-ride offers, including Hawaii. Wasn’t Hawaii her second choice?

Is RJP considered “National Team”. Utah wanted her to walk-on. BYU was her only scholarship offer.
