Kind of a rule question: Do CBVA A/AA/Open levels directly convert to AVP A/AA/Open levels or is there a difference? I wasn't aware of the AVP giving out rankings, just points. I know CBVA points count towards AVP points. ( cbva.com/Home/Content/CBVA_AVP) The AVP website has nothing. There's a list of events on volleyamerica that seems decently comprehensive ( www.volleyamerica.com/VA-Beach-Volleyball-Schedule.aspx) which implies that different states/regions have their own rankings (which is what I thought).

Sorry, I meant in terms of tournament levels. Volley America is also called AVP America - I think that branding might be the confusion here? The AVP acquired them a bit ago - avp.com/news/introducing-avp-america/Their tournaments are partnerships with local orgs, you'll see examples as you click thru the schedule. For those, the local rating system usually applies. Even then it's a lot of self sorting. Usually the 'open' level will have prize money while the others will not. The skill difference between CBVA and other states is extreme. Just within CBVA different beaches can be extreme, with distance from Manhattan/Hermosa being a rough indicator. Not sure which angle you're asking the question from but I play a good amount of mid level CBVA and plenty of set games with similar players. For men's, AAA/open players from other states will visit or move here and get waxed by our AA or even A players. Anyone lower than that usually struggles even in B. Women's side has more parity from the D1 players but you see the same disparity that NCAA does geographically.

Sorry, I meant in terms of tournament levels. In my conversations with high-level players who have played both CBVA and AVP America in other regions, the general consensus is that CBVA tournament levels are 1 level higher than most regional levels. Meaning, if you play Open locally outside of California, your best fit is CBVA AA. Likewise, if you play AA locally, your best fit would be CBVA A. Below that the naming conventions differ, and I haven't spoken to enough people at those levels to know, but my guess is the pattern continues. I think this is because the high ends are obviously higher in the beach volleyball capital of the country, but also the sand is deeper than most of us are used to. CBVATier 1: Open/AAA (Highest level of play. Open has cash prizes, AAA does not) Tier 2: AA (Very strong experienced beach players) Tier 3: A (Have developed some strong skills) Tier 4: B (Intermediate) Tier 5: Unrated (New to the beach game) AVP America
Tier 1: Open (Advanced, cash prizes) Tier 2: AA (High Intermediate) Tier 3: A (Intermediate) Tier 4: BB (Low Intermediate) Tier 5: B (Beginner/Novice)
