As for fundraising for Cal Poly and the like, I've never worked in the Alumni Relations department (or any other analogous department) responsible for getting alums (and others) to give $$$ to universities, so I don't have real life experiences or insights to know what strategies work (and what strategies don't work). However, I've given $$$ to various schools and, as a donor, I can say that based on my experiences, my tendencies are as follows:
1. I would more likely give to the schools I attended over schools I didn't attend. So, even if I have a house in the San Luis Obispo area (I do!!!), I'm not likely to donate $$$ to Cal Poly because I have no connection to that school. And certainly not to the volleyball program or the athletic department.
2. The amount of money I gave was a function of the quality of my experiences as a student.
3. I gave money to specific academic programs, not to a general fund.
4. I gave money by setting up endowments instead of giving some $$$ here, a few $$$ there, etc. I name my endowments after my grandparents or my dogs. LOL!
5. I've never given money to a school because I was a fan of that institution's sports teams. I must have some other emotional connection to that institution.

Also, having said all of the above, I wouldn't mind going to grad school at the University of Hawaii (Manoa) just for fun. Something worthless like English, History, Political Science, Psychology, Anthropology, Sociology, heck even Math (LOL!). But I would have to live in Manoa because I don't want to commute at all. I would attend volleyball matches but I wouldn't patronize the vendors at the SSC and I probably won't attend tournament matches involving teams other than Hawaii (Yeah...I'm one of those types). I probably wouldn't go to a football game because...too hot and I don't enjoy football anymore. But I would stand near by the gauntlet and high-five all the Wahine running by on their way to the tunnel after matches.
I think buses are free, if I'm not mistaken, so that's a plus. There's also that new rail transit system I'd like to ride.
ON the other hand, I have no desire whatsoever to attend any of the California schools "just for fun." LOL!

Among the schools in the Big West, the following have academic reputations in the very good-to-excellent range: Cal Poly UC Irvine UC Davis (UC Santa Barbara) 1(UC San Diego) 2With that said, as a teen I've never been attracted to any of these schools. My kids, too, have been drawn more toward other top schools. Just in California alone, we've been drawn more toward: Caltech Stanford UC Berkeley UCLA USC Other relatively good California schools that we've NEVER been drawn to (for one reason or another): Harvey Mudd Pepperdine LMU San Diego St. Mary's Pomona College Occidental Santa Clara Loyola Marymount --- 1 UC Santa Barbara is a good school but it's also known as a party school. What that means...who knows? 2 I put UC San Diego in parentheses because only recently did I "discover" it as a good institution. Growing up, I was never aware of the merits of this school. It was invisible on my personal radar. Pepperdine, Occidental, LMU, USD ? not really any better than Beach or Fullerton every school is a party school to some extent UC Davis UC San Diego yes, UCSB definitely Cal Poly except for UC Irvine, definitely not, the antitheses of a party school there are certain majors it could be better to go to Cal Poly, UCSD than even Cal for undergrad Architecture, Ag, Engineering for Cal Poly. or Bio or Marine Bio for UCSD. UC Berkeley's undergrad bio offerings were all over the place. even for other careers, could be better off going to Beach for an arts, music, or nursing major than other 'elite' schools.

And the sweep is complete. Watched a bit of the first and second set, and Cal Poly has a nice block and some arms, though their passing and floor defense needs some work

Hiatt and Stockham both hit negative and both were responsible for all of SFA service aces. That won’t get it done. CP got to hope this afternoon was a fluke, otherwise it’s going to be a long year.

I honestly like Hiatt more on the outside than in the middle, though the passing problems don't help with the sets to the middle. Hope it was just a fluke, though they also looked rough against Iowa. Not sure if Akima should be at the libero spot too because she plays fine defense, but her passing was also rough

Glenn and Bacon out of the LBSU match tonight due to covid protocol. Their current lineup looks to be just as decent (not sure about the freshman middle yet though)
