The Big West had some big wins this weekend with 6 teams starting off the season with a winning record and another one at .500; however, the bottom 4 teams went winless. The bottom third is really killing the conference and have to find a way to improve. Northridge had a couple 5 set losses but the other 3 took some real lumps. UCI should win a couple of matches next week against pretty week completion and I believe Northridge will do the same. Fullerton is so young this season and I do not see many wins coming from them and Riverside historically has been on the bottom. Hopefully the top half will continue to get better and wins those close matches in non conference.

I am looking forward to all of LBSU's matches this weekend but I am also very interested in how UCSB plays. The Gauchos are faced with Pepperdine, Oregon and San Diego State so the team will be really tested this weekend on the road.

Do you think based on academics alone that UCI should surpass Hawaii and Long Beach, who have the fanbase, history, and investment? And then UCSB and Cal Poly have great, if not better, academics, plus more desirable campuses and better volleyball tradition to boot. Edit: Decided to look up salary. They paid her $116K to be a D-I head coach in Orange County in 2022. Not sure whether there's a housing benefit on top of that, but even so I'd say the ROI is pretty stellar. I think that UCI and Cal Poly have much more unrealized potential. Hawai'i has fared the best and longest in terms of program quality, fanbase and resources (at least volleyball-wise). Long Beach paid the previous coach more than UCI pays their's and the ROI on that investment was extremely poor notwithstanding the history. Santa Barbara is resource poor and their athletic department is pretty bad and horrible at fund-raising. Cal Poly alums have some of the highest average earnings after graduation among CA schools, but they're more isolated and still have football as a budgetary drain. Irvine is a short drive from Newport and in the middle of one of the wealthiest, vibrant parts of Southern California, and they don't have much tradition on the women's side, but they've had success in the men's game, so at least they have some type of blueprint to work from. In a few years, UCSD may be in a position to reach that same level of potential, given their academic and geographic positioning. If,...you follow CAL POLY as I do you will find there are some very deep pockets among POLY's alum. Their fan base for VB, nevertheless, has been silent during this start of the team's season. Coach Walters may have something to do with this phenomenon. POLY will be on the road again this weekend. This time playing in Nacogdoches, TX. Hopefully, during the first SLO VB tournament in many years, Sept. 14, things will change.

My main point has been to suggest that Cal Poly could be doing better. I doubt you disagree with that.

UC Davis loses at Pacific in 4 sets. Now the last two undefeated teams in the conference are Cal State Bakersfield and UCSB

On the contrary,...the "bar" for CAL POLY athletics needs to be set higher if VB and other main programs are to be in the mix year after year. Football, which has been struggling, should have a break out season in 2023!!!

Cal Poly is stuck in a football vortex. building a $30 million momument to futility, got bless the Maddons regardless! Cal Poly should drop football, add MVB, and get on with life. football is dying in the US. yeah, the gladitor mentality and upcoming semi-pro structure is coming to college football, which might fall flat on it's face eventually. parents by and large have antipathy to football for their youth, even if they are addicted to the sickness of the gambling and hooplah and cycle of TV self-advertising addiction that is football in the US. Cal Poly doesn't need football, interesting that the admin can't even see that.

It's becoming a regional sport, participation is still growing in the Southeast (and Texas and a few other random states) but dropping rapidly in the Northeast and West.
But NFL ratings are still relatively robust and declining at a slower rate than regular TV shows.

Among the schools in the Big West, the following have academic reputations in the very good-to-excellent range:
Cal Poly UC Irvine UC Davis (UC Santa Barbara)1 (UC San Diego)2
With that said, as a teen I've never been attracted to any of these schools. My kids, too, have been drawn more toward other top schools. Just in California alone, we've been drawn more toward:
Caltech Stanford UC Berkeley UCLA USC
Other relatively good California schools that we've NEVER been drawn to (for one reason or another):
Harvey Mudd Pepperdine LMU San Diego St. Mary's Pomona College Occidental Santa Clara Loyola Marymount
--- 1 UC Santa Barbara is a good school but it's also known as a party school. What that means...who knows?
2 I put UC San Diego in parentheses because only recently did I "discover" it as a good institution. Growing up, I was never aware of the merits of this school. It was invisible on my personal radar.

UC San Diego’s academic reputation among high schoolers has always been overshadowed by the fact that it overlooks one of the few nude beaches in Southern California.
