I like Tyler a lot, but what has he actually done as a coach? He got a lot of credibility by being John Cook’s assistant at Nebraska, but his two seasons at Long Beach were not spectacular. He introduced a faster, men’s style of play, but he didn’t show that he could train his players to pass well enough to run that system, and Zeyna didn’t really show a lot of improvement in her two years with Tyler. If anything, the Santa Barbara coach achieved more of a turnaround in his first year than Tyler did in either of his years. I also understand that Long Beach made a lot of promises that they may no longer be in a position to honor, so it’s not surprising to me that he is looking elsewhere. If Tyler’s not bothered by the travel schedule for USC/UCLA, he really should have made a push for the UCLA job instead when it was open. On the other hand, good for Keller for being open to bringing Tyler on-board and not feeling threatened.

That was hard to watch, he just seemed to give up on the match. From what I heard, he told the players he was leaving because of “family” issues. Not really sure what that means, but to take a job as an assistant somewhere else? That’s just strange to me.

I hope Tyler doesn't leave. I don't think LBSU did as well as they could've these past few seasons, but I also think that they were headed in the right direction. I would hate for that progress to be derailed in a short amount of time.

Wow... that's really unfortunate. I get he was a controversial coach to some degree, but he brought life back into the program and although things didnt pan out after they Texas to start the year, they still put together a respectable season with a real potential for a NCAA run this year. I hope LBSU can find the right coach to bring on and keep the trajectory upward. BWC is better with a strong LBSU team.

Disappointed. My uneducated guess is he decided to pull this off, I'll miss much more family life than I would as an assistant.

UCSB's Jones was already on the coaching staff and returned an incredible team with Ohwobete, McKnight, and Farmer at the pins, and Peed at libero. That's a great foundation to build on. Hilderbrand had to really restart the program and when he came in 2021, it was too late to really recruit for the 2022 year and a lot of players had commit for 2023. He took the team from middle of the Big West to the upper echelon, and based just on graduation, you could project them being top 2 in the conference (Cal Poly possibly being top since they graduate almost no one).

Coach Tyler is a great coach and was a great player. Whatever he decides, it is his to decide. The negative energy is undeserved and disappointing.

Winning is the only comparison that matters in a conference like the Big West, where more than 1 NCAA bid has become the exception. He certainly did a better job than the previous coach, but not a good enough job imo to really deserve the kind of adulation and promotion. He's a good coach, a good person and has a lot of potential to become a much better coach. On the other hand, this is a bit of a strange move, and I guess we'll find out at some point what the motivation actually was.

He inherited better talent at LBSU than you're crediting. It's just that the two top OHs (who would later start for Sweet 16 teams) just transferred out after he was hired.

Tyler to Northwestern? Or UCSD? We'll probably see Jimmy Lundgren taking over UCSD Is this a guess? Or some other knowledge? Why would he be a good fit?

Big news at LBSU. Heard Tyler is leaving, and Natalie Morgan will serve as interim head coach. Is this real? Literally nothing about it anywhere but here.

All the hype with Tyler coming in as head coach, and he’s out after 2 years. Such a disappointment, and not fair to the returning players. Hope whoever they hire is sincere about bringing the program back.
