NCAA Women's Volleyball DIV-I tournament expansion recommendation in multiple committee collaborative working group discussion... on increasing tournament size to 25% of total DIV-I WVB teams. The Transformation Committee recommendation would result in adding about twenty more teams to the current NCAA DIV-I WVB tournament field. Report of the NCAA Division I Competition Oversight Committee January 9, 2024, Meeting ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com/committees/d1/compoversig/Jan2024D1COC_Jan9Report.pdf"Bracket expansion update. Division I governance staff updated the committee on the Division I Board of Directors Finance Committee’s review of options from the six sport committees (baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball) impacted by the Transformation Committee’s recommendation that sports sponsored by at least 200 institutions be provided a 25% access ratio into the championship. The finance committee considered the various options from sport committees to determine funding impacts but also acknowledged additional impacts of bracket expansion beyond financial allocations. The finance committee asked staff to create an internal working group to collaborate with membership on potential impacts of bracket expansion."

CSUN has a candidate on campus now for their open HC position. I really would like to see CSUN hire a promising coach that can elevate the Matadors. Conference needs to be competitive from top to bottom and a great hire here could go a long way.

CSUN made the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament over a decade ago. It would be nice to see them bring on a coach that can help them get back there!

While CSUN is looking for a head coach two of their players in Sr. setter 5-11 Carisa Barron, all Big West honorable mention and Sr. MB 6-2 Taylor Hunter transferred to Portland State.
In related news Jr. 5-11 OH Kendra Duffey transferred from Portland State to UC Irvine for 2024.

UCI also picked up a grad transfer from USC and CSUN has a good libero from Forza coming in next year.

After Luyties lead UCSD to their best Big West finish last season I found it strange that's when they would enact a coaching change. But it looks like all their top players are in tact and returning for now.

With OH Duffey (Portland St) joining MB Smith (USC), UCI now has 3 girls who played High School together at Aliso Niguel. The 3rd being the setter Feliciano who was Big West freshman of the year last season. UCI could push some teams in 2024.

The 3rd being the setter Feliciano who was Big West freshman of the year last season. UCI could push some teams in 2024. I noticed that under Coach Hain UCI has placed an emphasis on recruiting winners. That being players with club volleyball medals or CIF titles on their resumes. When you have a team full of winners that seems to increase the level of competition in practice and the team will take on a mentality of never quitting.
San Jose Archbishop Mitty is a high school that if I recall correctly won the Open Division CIF section, NorCal and California state titles in 2016, 2017 and 2021. From this volleyball powerhouse UCI currently has 2 that played together in Jr. OH Kendra MacDonald and Sr. Opp Ellen Veargason.
Village Christian High School won the Division 2 CIF section, SoCal and California state title in 2018. From this school UCI currently has 3 that played together in Jr. Libero Campbell Jensen, RS So. Opp Emma Napoleon and Jr. MB Elizabeth Miller.
Aliso Niguel High School won the Division 2 CIF section title in 2021. As vbdork mentioned above UCI now has 3 alums that played high school together here. But these 3 players in Smith, Duffey and Feliciano also played club for T-Street in Irvine.
UCI also has 2 freshmen that committed with titles under their belt.
Freshman Lillian Lansing 6-0 Opp/MB helped lead her Jesuit High School team to the Oregon Class 6A volleyball state championship in 2023.
Freshman Jessica Bate 5-11 setter/RS hitter helped lead her J Serra High School team to the Div. 2 CIF Section Championships in 2023.

Unfortunately, there is more to this story that may or may not make the light of day. And several players have already left the team...most prior to his departure.

I am not privy to any of the inside baseball stuff at UCSD but I was impressed with the team's play under the former coach. He look "grumpy" but his team's overall play was solid and it looked like he was maximizing the team's potential. As an outsider I was surprised by his departure and frankly a little disappointed. Hey, as a LBSU fan I felt similarly with the departure of the LB head coach too.

UCI was becoming a handful at the end of last season... trending up. UCI is one of the programs that can be built into a regional player and the conference needs them to continue to prosper. I expect that the anteaters will make a little more noise next year.
