^ What Dain has that Stein doesn’t is Gustavo. Yeah, this weekend when ESPN interviewed the University of Texas head volleyball coach, Jerritt Elliott, he said he’s looking to hire a well respected coach for the new beach program. He’s clearly at Gulf Shores looking to poach someone. I first thought that Dain loves the beach too much to move to Austin. Then I wondered if Elliott would make an offer to Gustavo. Mike Bohn needs to step up and keep the championship streak going by compensating Dain and Gustavo. When University of Georgia stole our USC national champion track and soccer coaches, those Georgia programs were already established and just needed the extra elite coaching. Texas will be a grind. Talent hotbed, but truly starting from the ground up.

UCLA Men's Indoor Volleyball won NCAA Championship #20 this afternoon. Should the Bruins win on the Beach tomorrow, that would be a significant double for Indoor + Beach. It was equally significant in 1984, when UCLA Men's and Women's Indoor Volleyball teams both won NCAA titles. I looked and don't find a year that UCLA Softball and Baseball won Natties in the same year, though it was as close as can be in 2010 Softball won, but Baseball finished runner-up. Question - did the Bruins win those men's and women's titles in the same calendar year (1984), or in the same academic year? It's no matter either way. I'm just wondering as I'm used to thinking of school teams winning titles in the same year meaning the same academic year, but I'm thinking you are in this case meaning same calendar year. Good question. Currently, for the women, academic and fall calendar seasons are the same. For the men, the academic year 1984-1985 splits the calendar. I'll go look that up. *edit* The UCLA men won their championship in May, 1984, which was part of the 1983-1984 Academic year. The women won in December, 1984, part of the 1984-1985 academic year.

Yeah, I was thinking of Sinjin also, but did he ever represent the US at the Olympics. Wikipedia doesn’t show anything. Edit: Sinjin’s own site shows he played in the 1996 Olympics. www.sinjinvolleyball.com/biography Yep. With Carl Henkel Right. Having recently finished reading Kings of Summer, I should’ve remembered instantly. That epic battle in Atlanta between Smith/Henkel and Karch/Kent serves as the backdrop of the entire book. And it also goes into Sinjin and Karch’s days at UCLA.

Was off grid and didn’t watch at all. What’s the story behind the USC Kraft/Maple losses?

Was off grid and didn’t watch at all. What’s the story behind the USC Kraft/Maple losses? ESPN barely showed the 1s at all today. Was wondering the same thing. Most of the coverage was on the 3s and 5s.

Most of the coverage was on the 3s and 5s. From the little bit that I saw, it was mostly down to outstanding play from Denaburg and Boyd, who played like anything but a freshman.

They said it on the show's opening as well, that UCLA sent more players to Olympics than any other school. They didn't list the players. I was doubtful. I saw that and was also skeptical. They must have been including indoor players who ended up going to the Olympics for beach. I could only come up with ten: Kiraly, Nygaard, Wong, Metzger, Hanley, McPeak, Youngs, Jordan, Fendrick, Sponcil. Who am I missing? Edit: Sinjin Smith How about Carl Henkel and Annett (Buckner) Davis.

Sorry if you see this twice, because I am also going to post it in the thread about moving the NCAA Tournament away from Gulf Shores, which must be one of the dumber decisions I have seen the NCAA make (and there certainly is a lot of competition for that honor).
Without question, this one of the two or three best and most complete, awesome tournament sites that I have ever attended. And that includes literally hundreds of tournaments through the years that we have personally attended. The only ones I can think of which might compare are a few indoor Final Fours and perhaps a Chicago AVP at North Avenue Beach back in the day. It was just that good, and I’m sure folks have great stories about overseas FIVB’s that are equally superb, but I can only speak from my own experience.
The entire town of Gulf Shores obviously takes tremendous pride in running this tournament. The sand is ridiculously perfect, meticulously groomed, and did not appear to have single rock or shell in it. The five courts are strategically placed – three in a row in front and two in the back, with plenty of space in between them and several outside warm-up courts. You can see three or four courts at one if you place yourself at the top of the small bleachers and stand up, but a few rows of plush, low seats at each court along with a few more rows of higher up regular seats provide plenty of good viewing options. A few light (soda, beer, water, snacks) concession stands right among the Courts, an acai bowl vendor inside the venue, and a perfectly placed entry to the huge Hangout restaurant complex 100 feet from the main court complete the site.
How cool would it be if the AVP could somehow figure out a way to parlay the excitement of rooting for your favorite schools into the pro game. I realize how different these two are, but there is something about having all 5 teams playing at the same time (which I thought I would despise, by the way, but which proved to be pretty amazing), and waiting for the horn which signifies that one school has reached the magical three wins. Again, kinda anti-climactic for the poor teams still playing (unless the score is 2-2), but it is way cool. For years, we came to the Huntington beach open which was always held on the same first weekend in May, but we could not be happier that this weekend was free and we came down here.
So many reasonably priced restaurants. hotels and Airbnb-Vrbo sites within a short walk to the venue. All of the typical ice cream, t-shirt and souvenir shops that you would expect, but so many choices are right within a short walk.
So here’s the rub. I get that many of the teams are from Cali. I get that Huntington Beach is a beautiful place. And I get that rules exist, and that there is sometimes a benefit to allowing other locations to make proposals and put in bids to host certain events (even though, the last I checked, the NCAA is not truly a governmental-type entity with would be bound by public bidding/request for proposal type-rules, and I admittedly have no idea if there is some requirement in their Articles/By-laws/Rules which mandates some type of open bidding process).
Conclusion? It is inane to not reward a community which has already made an awesome tradition out of hosting a tournament by moving it anywhere else. Just my thoughts!

I’ve been Gulf Shores for 3 of the championships. It is good venue with hotels, condos etc within walking distance. The large ‘Hangout’ restaurant is connected to the viewing areas and it works for food, drink and rest rooms. Keep it.
