I have seen references to Stein not placing teams correctly in lineup and then above Rita also possibly “sandbagging” teams. I have two other teams that I have long thought did the same. I thought rules were in place to keep teams from doing that. In the case of UCLA, Newberry was at 2s last year and this year is at 5s. So yeah, sandbagging... but wait... Newberry was injured for several months and missed most of the season. She doesn't belong at 2s. A player coming back from injury... 5s is a perfectly good spot, and whitmarsh, as much as I pull for her, is 5s level talent as well. What would have been *really* interesting would have been the back-from-injury Sparks, playing 5s with Newberry. They could play 100 matches and never lose. Sadly Sparks never made it back this year.

I don’t dispute that Devon Newberry’s injury allows for some flexibility. Here are some additional facts though: 1) 2021, Newberry pairs with Lea Monkhouse for the NCAA Championships at the 2s 2) 2022, Newberry pairs with Jaden Whitmarsh for the NCAA Championships at the 2s 3) 2023, Newberry starts the year at 2s until she re-injures herself on March 5. Stein eager to beat USC reinserts Newberry on April15 at the 5s. Whitmarsh and Newberry go 8-0 at the 5s, winning many sets 21-9, 21-11, and only losing one set to USC’s Bakos/Walker. If Newberry’s able to play 9 straight matches, including 3 in one day, then she’s no longer injured.

Here is the report on the March 5 reinjury of her 2022 surgically repaired shoulder (torn labrum). “I went up to swing the ball, and I heard a huge crack,” Newberry recalled. “I called a medical timeout right away and finished that game playing with my left hand. As soon as the ball hit the ground, I fell to the floor and cried.”When's the last time you had to take off 6 weeks because of reinjuring a surgically repaired shoulder, and came back 100%? It takes months. 5s is where a 2s player goes to play through rehab.

It takes months. 5s is where a 2s player goes to play through rehab. Seems like a reasonable justification if she’s not able to beat the same players she’s beat out the last 2 years. I don’t watch UCLA practice so I don’t know. I do see them crushing opponents at the 5s at the same time as their teammates are losing (Stanford loss for instance). Audrey Nourse had a shoulder injury and was rehabbing all of last season. Someone on here last year said the twins weren’t performing well and should be dropped to the 5s. (Their mom popped on and called the board a vile place, but that’s a different topic) The Nourses stuck at the 4s, where they belonged last year, and went 3-0 during Gulf Shores last year, including beating Monserez and Powers in straight sets in the semis. Maintaining your integrity can be a slippery slope.

UCLA looked very impressive in their 3-0 win. Rain looks pretty bad. I see there’s a forecast at the moment that lightning could hit at noon. Edit: now they’re in weather delay as there was a lightning strike within an 8 mile radius.

Interested to see what happens. Weather doesn’t look great today for the rest of the day

Once again, great work by the NCAA of hiding scores and making it impossible to follow for fans who can't watch the live feeds.

Once again, great work by the NCAA of hiding scores and making it impossible to follow for fans who can't watch the live feeds. Why rely on the NCAA? Your only setting yourself up for disappointment, right? My "go to" source for live updates of matches I cannot watch are the Twitter feeds of the schools involved. You get updates every few minutes, results, and the good ones even post some highlights. Not perfect, not point for point, but it's a good solution if you haven't tried it.

This shouldn't be the case, but most programs do a pretty good job of posting consistent live match updates.

Interested to see what happens. Weather doesn’t look great today for the rest of the day There are 13 more matches they're trying to get in before the 11am nationally televised championship match on Sunday (and I'm SURE they desperately want that match to start on time). If there is even a 90-minute window that they think it'll rain but with no lightning, I have to imagine they're going to try to play.
