Stanford, CA - The No. 23-ranked Saint Mary's volleyball team dropped a tough road match to No. 3 Stanford in their first match of the Stanford Invitational on Thursday night at Maples Pavilion. The Gaels will face No. 24 UC Santa Barbara on Friday night at 5 p.m. in their second match of the tournament at Maples Pavilion.
The Gaels came out strong in each of the first three games, but the Cardinal fought back midway through each game to win the match 30-20, 30-22 and 30-21. With the loss the Gaels fall to 6-2 on the season and Stanford improved to 9-1 on the year.

In Game 1, the Gaels fell behind 8-4 and then trailed 15-9 heading into the game's first media timeout. Saint Mary's cut the lead to 17-13, but the Cardinal rallied off two more points before the Gaels called their first timeout. Stanford continued its strong play, taking a 26-18 lead before Saint Mary's called its final timeout of the game. The Cardinal went on to win the first game 30-20. The Gaels were led by Stidham who had three kills and six digs and Barker added three kills. Salzman added two kills and Bible had four assists.
In Game 2, the Gaels jumped in front 3-1, but the Cardinal went on a 9-2 run to take a 10-5 lead before the Gaels called their first timeout. To start the third game, the Gaels trailed Stanford 6-5, but the Cardinal scored four straight points to take a 10-5 lead, forcing a Gael timeout. Saint Mary's continued to battle throughout the game, cutting the lead to 17-12, forcing Stanford to take its first timeout. The Cardinal continued to hold the lead, taking a 26-18 lead before the Gaels called their final timeout. Stanford went on to win the third game 30-21.

It was a disappointing match to watch in that neither Stanford nor St Mary's played very well for the most part. Stanford looked tired and flat and the Gaels appeared game but somewhat intimidated. The passing was not crisp by either team. I would say Richards was the POG, followed by Foluke. Erin Waller started at the other MB position, wearing a protective black brace/pad on her injured elbow and performed creditably. edit: I previously erroneously posted that St Mary's beat Cal last week; actually it was San Diego. Sorry.

Hard to believe this was the same St Mary's team that beat Cal last week. Who did Waller bump from the season-opening lineup? Girard?

Just checked the gametracker boxscore and it doesn't look like Girard played. Is she hurt, publius?

But then, so did Liz Suiter, who had been sidelined with an ankle sprain. Neither of them played. Girard played middle last year and this year, she's listed as an OH. During the warm-up, Dunning warmed-up with 4 middles (Suiter, Akiradewo, Waller and Mellard (I think - I don't have my programme)). Girard was with the others. BTW, Stanford's front line is pretty huge. They're stacked in the OH position with Richards and Barboza who play all around and have Nnamani as the Opposite (with Goldhahn subbing out for her in the back row). Where would you put Girard? I'm wondering if maybe they're working Suiter in slowly. This is speculation on my part!

Oh yeah, Ogonna Nnamani was at the game and sat on the player's bench. I thought they wer going to do some sort of presentation during the match since she won the Honda Broderick Award....... they didn't!

I can see Stanford using Girard as a back up to Nnamani at Opposite.... or as a replacement for Nnamani when they need more height.

She is gonna be in school for the fall quarter. BTW Nutter, that was a nice sweatshirt you were wearing: Banff, Canada?
