It seems like Japan is starting to figure out Sweden's defense, but it's likely too late.

Penalty coming to Japan...off the crossbar and out. What a shame.

Yeah they've definitely been better in the second half, but don't see Japan coming back at this point.

Wow, Japan just missed a goal on a direct free kick. And then they score right after. 2-1 with three minutes left in regular time.

10 minutes of stoppage time for Japan to try to get an equalizer.

Sweden hangs on to win. A first-time champion is now guaranteed.

Yeah they've definitely been better in the second half, but don't see Japan coming back at this point. Nearly made me eat my words. Hangs on is right. They nearly pulled it off. Crowd was very pro Japan, intense booing when Sweden were taking their time at the end (especially Musovic).

Lol, salty American soccer fans are declaring victory because I guess Beerensteyn suggested that Americans are arrogant. Uh, where's the lie? This is why the rest of the world (and frankly, a lot of fellow Americans) really dislike American soccer fans. They just can't help but be obnoxious. Also, I had somehow never seen this ad that was airing in the runup to the tournament. If you're going to make an ad like that, you better be the 1992 Dream Team.

All fans everywhere are deeply annoying. Part of being a fan.

US was the number 1 ranked team and defending champion, so...?
Also, it's kind of not looking so bad that they barely lost to Sweden in PKs now.

I hadn't seen that and it gave me a little laugh. Declaring victory before the season/tournament/event begins is never a good idea. Remember LeBron and the Heat in 2011? Dirk does.

Lol, great example. Though at least the USWNT had won the last two World Cups. LeBron had never won anything at that point.

He took a very different approach in his return to Cleveland and I think that ring means far more to him than his Miami or LA rings.

I feel bad for Japan because they had played so well, but this is also the first time they faced a team with that physicality putting that much pressure on them, and it really threw them off. Once they went into desperation mode, they got it back but it was too little too late.
There may be a weird triangle here, where Japan is way better than Spain H2H, Sweden better than Japan - and maybe Spain being better than Sweden (TBD). Match-ups are weird.
I had initially thought Japan would roll USA H2H, but seeing as how US would have similar physicality (and even more speed) and would have come at them the same way, I'm starting to think USA would have had a good chance if they had advanced.
