OK finally finished watching. I skipped set 4 tho. I deserve better than to see that. JWO was back to herself. She was quick. She was taking charge. I loved every second of it. I was always a casual fan of O'Neal because, gross, you want me to stan Texas? But wow oh wow I didn't expect her to catch onto the international game so quickly. She's gonna be fun to watch develop overseas. It cannot be stressed enough how Lanier and Skinner didn't let any of these matches get to them. They might've had some bad moments, but they never cracked. Their passing stayed solid even when their offense slipped. Proud of their focus and really happy to have a pair of promising OHs like them. Hancock and Annie were great leaders this week. They both made some really solid plays in the 5th set. They weren't perfect. But I think they did what Karch ultimately needed from them in Week 1. We love you Donna. Unbiased, of course. (Melissa Vargas, please don't make me a stan. My roster is already so full ðŸ˜ðŸ˜ðŸ˜) Sometimes you have to dump someone from your roster to make room for legends in the making.

Karch fired up about the Ball Touch challenge was scary in Set 3 😰

I liked how the US righted the ship that listed in the 4th, especially for such an inexperienced squad, but really Turkey did not play up to their standard that last set. It was a bit of a let down from them - that crowd deserved better.
That said, the US put themselves into the position to take advantage by their excellent play in sets 1-3. Impressed by Lanier and Skinner in different ways. Didn't realize Lanier had so many different elements she can bring to a team beyond swinging. Skinner is just a beast, especially with a set close to the net. JWO was back to her Olympics self. Thought Hancock managed well. I also have qualms with some of her location, but that feels like nitpicking. Drews was important, but I wish she was bit better defensively.
The pin blocking though was really problematic. Turkey went away from the middle and after the pin blockers almost every time. Maybe that was just Karakurt and Vargas, but we've seen it in other matches. Balls going through arms, outside hands being tooled repeatedly. I am now wondering if the idea of sealing the pins and funneling attacks to the middle of the court that we saw in the early matches was down to an understood weakness blocking on the pin.

Karch fired up about the Ball Touch challenge was scary in Set 3 😰 I thought that was great! The ball was clearly down on the replay, so why the ref was just glossing over that and awarding the point to Türkiye needed to be called out. He gets fired up so infrequently that when he does, whether it is at his teams play or at the refs, it catches their attention fast.

Makes me think the ref looked at the wrong thing at 1st instead of whether ball was down or not.

Honestly pretty amazing for the US to win all the matches, esp with Italy, Serbia, and Turkey in the mix. And esp with what was realistically mostly ladies that don't start. Granted, JWO is the starting libero, but Micha is kinda the sometime starter and Drews has started a lot, but lets face it, Carlini and Thompson are better. The only thing that really disappointed me was the usage of Nunevillar. Coming in as a backrow for 1 rotation just doesn't seem intelligent. I realize that's one of her main strengths, but coming off the bench cold for a couple of mins, then rinse/repeat half an hour later has to be insanely difficult. I just wish, given her usage that Karch would've given her the start against Korea. I thought she'd earned it with the crappy way he used her in the previous matches.

Rettke getting huge touches there I love reading this having not watched. I have to look up college allegiances (i.e. Texas) to qualify statements.
