Porro is a decent setter however, he is small. When he was on the front line the Italian block was one person, which is suicide at this level. Behind he can't defend. Volleyball rewards first and foremost those who are tall. If you are of average height, even if you jump a lot, you have much less margin. It's a shame because I doubt they will have careers at a high level. De Giorgi probably should have summoned a few more starters so they can get to play a little more. Such quick matches don't serve much as "growth", although they can now understand how much of a gap there is between them and a high-level team (I don't think the U.S. team has put much effort into it, though).

I literally didn't follow the mens season this year outside of a few CL matches.... and I have no idea who's the top Italian squad anymore outside of Giannelli Zaytsev spent this club season being a passing OPP because Nikolov is a terrible passer. He did well at the service line and he was decent OOS but he literally has no explosiveness. Folks talking about Anderson really need to look at how much Zaytsev has lost in terms of mobility. Italy's best are all young. So their "top" is still at least a quad away from being who they were in Rio. I didn't want to say out loud but that is exactly what I was thinking. OPP is a physical position and hard to make up for physicality with experience and savvy, especially against top teams... more than any other position on the court.

I still think Porro has a chance to have a nice career on the national team the same way Sbertoli has. He might not be #1 but he's a great back-up with a nice serve and he sets well, just makes some questionable choices. But he's very young. Sanchez for Argentina is another example of a very "small" setter who still brings a ton of value to his national team. Italy needs to be more creative with how they manage it.

USA looked great, lots of talent. Can’t help but think that there’s not that many exciting young prospects though. Probably not the goal of this week I know but still

A little slow honestly, meaning not as explosive as we're used to. He is just coming off a fresh rolled ankle and clearly isn't exploding to the ball and getting the lift he wants. All around game and movement is fine Yes I noticed that. He should rest more. His defense is really good.

Most are in the prime or just on the down side of it. Cant dent that. Maybe Gabi I believe Matt can hold on but I don't think both vet middles will make it. Matt must hold, no other oppos are consistently reliable.

I'd be surprised if they took 2 liberos so it will just be Erik. Erik is too good... Zero reason to bring another libero. He normally will not get aced so much in the matches. Maybe he should rest

TJ is almost a non-stop highlight real these last 2 matches. I hope MA is just pacing himself and the slower pace is only due to the ankle... his shoulder is slowing down from what I am seeing. To be expected, but the velocity is not what the other younger players are bringing. OPP may not be the position for him. Well... USA does not have a lot of options, and that is why we naturalize Gabi Garcia(hopefully he can pick up but seems struggling in club this past season)

Gabi too, I think they will cross paths with MA soon. OPP is not going to be our dominate pin for teh short term. Luckily TJ and Russell are very good offensively and getting used to carrying a big load.

I just hope Hanes will try to shoulder a little bit more responsibility of attacking. TJ and Aaron can focus more on passing/defense, so that they will not be so tired. Our middles do all look good, the connection with MC is great.
