SAN DIEGO, CA -- The 25th-ranked Long Beach State women's volleyball team defeated American University, 3-0, at the San Diego Invitational on Friday evening from the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Game scores were 30-13, 30-22, 30-18.
The victory improved Long Beach State to 6-2, while the loss dropped American to 5-5. Long Beach State is a perfect 5-0 all-time versus the Eagles.
Alexis Crimes and Mariko Crum paced the 49er attack with nine kills each, while Ali Daley and Rosie Lewis both contributed eight kills each. Nicole Vargas posted 36 assists, two aces, and nine digs, while directing the 49er offense to a season-high .418 attack percentage. Long Beach State out-blocked the Eagles, 12-4, including a match-high six from Erika Chidester. Cutrina Biddulph recorded 10 kills for American, who hit just .082, in the losing effort.
The 49ers used a .560 attack percentage (15-1-25) in the first set to defeat American, 30-13. Long Beach State built a 22-9 lead after a Lewis kill and ended the game on a Sara Kroneberger service ace. Game two was no different as the 49ers opened up an 18-11 lead after a Heather Laudato service ace. Two consecutive attack errors ended the second stanza at 30-22. LBSU built a 15-9 lead after a Chidester service ace, and proceeded to close out American on a 15-9 run as Crimes' ninth kill capped off the match.
Long Beach State finishes the San Diego Invitational with a pair of matches tomorrow vs. Arkansas at noon and San Diego at 7:00 p.m.

Nicole Vargas totaled 36 assists for the 49ers, who improved to 6-2 this season while dropping American to 5-5. Vargas also added two aces and nine digs.
The 49ers also got eight kills apiece from Ali Daley and Rosie Lewis, and six blocks from Erika Chidester. Long Beach State held a 12-4 advantage in blocks.
Cutrina Buddulph led American with 10 kills.
The 49ers finish play in the event today with matches against Arkansas (noon) and San Diego (7 p.m.).
