The 2023 Noles look to build on a strong returning roster. Losing starters Emma Clothier (to SMU as grad transfer) and Emily Ryan (graduation) and Ava Pitchford (Oregon State) hurts, but Coach Poole has backfilled the spots with incoming freshmen and a transfer middle from Oregon (Kiari Robey). Koenig and Louis were all named All-ACC second team after making the All-ACC Freshmen team the year before. Rothman was named to the All-ACC Freshmen team last year. Six rotation pin hitters, Koenig and Rothman played for the Noles beach team this spring and added to their individual defense and shot selection. Koenig led the team in kills, attempts and points and was second in digs and aces. Rothman was off to a fast start before a nagging injury kept her sidelined for a third of the season. Libero Dupes is back from ankle surgery and ready. She still led the team in digs even though she missed 16 sets. Draskovic (Jelly) led the team in assists and is expected to share duty with incoming freshman Phelan in Poole's usual 6-2 offense. In the middle, Kiari Robey should fill in nicely for the exiting Emily Ryan (119 blocks). Robey led Oregon in blocks with 107. Louis is expected to retain her starting spot as the other middle as she was second on the team in kills (237) and blocks (101). On the right I expect to see Conley joined by 6'4" freshman Maddy Snider. As usual Coach Poole scheduled a pretty good RPI preseason. The Noles will face Florida, Hawaii, TCU, Georgia, Auburn and UCF among others before getting to the ACC schedule.

Maybe plays on the RS instead of Snider.

I think he pulls them too fast after an error or two. It makes it hard for a player, especially 6 rotation pins,, to get into a groove if they are always threatened with being pulled. I see him using Filimaua as "motivation" for Koenig and Rothman to keep them error free. If that's the case then I see a long and stressful season as no one will settle into the job and be productive. This will be the first season in many that he actually has more pins than middles. Also, if Snider or Conley aren't able to be a big presence at the net, Filimaua could see time on the right.

I guess I was anticipating that Filmaua and Snider would be battling for one of the RS positions and that Filmaua could win it. Or - they could use her as a supersub for anyone depending on how the game is progressing.

First weekend in the books and the Noles looked good doing it. The team leads the nation in hitting percentage at .440 Kills 140 Errors 23 Attempts 266 The setters freshman Kenna Phelan and Grad Andjelija Draskovic moved the ball around very well. 40% to left, 31% to middles and 29% to the right. Passing was some of the best I've seen from FSU allowing the setters to run the offense at will. The left pins were hitting at a .423 clip, middles .506 and the rights .390 Only gave up 5 aces while serving 24 aces in 9 sets. Libero Emory Dupes is out for the season with a knee injury and freshman Kyleene Filimaua stepped in and was fantastic. I like this teams chances of playing the spoiler a lot this year. Because they aren't getting any ranking recognition, I think they will sneak up on a lot of teams.

Last year it was a broken ankle. This year ACL. Not sure if same leg.

Looking forward to the return of Emma Clothier to Tully gym as FSU hosts her new team SMU on Friday night.

It doesn’t look like Rothman has played - or even been present on the bench - for the past few games. Any idea what’s going on there? Injury? Illness?

After the addition of Kelsey Perry from Iowa State, I was looking at FSU's roster for 2024. Sydney Conley is taking her Covid year elsewhere and Skye Ekes is in the portal. Pretty sure Laila N'Diaye is in the portal as well but could be wrong there.
OH: Koenig (Sr), Rothman (Jr), Filimaua (So) OPP: Snider (So) MB: Gelumbickas (R-So), Louis (Sr), Perry (R-So), Robey (Sr) S: Phelan (So), Reynolds (So) L/DS: Dupes (R-Jr), Gaona (So), Hultquist (R-Jr), Russ (Fr)
If this is correct, FSU is probably not done getting players from the portal. I was thinking they definitely need another pin and maybe a grad setter since they have a setter coming in 2025. I have no idea what their scholarship situation is like though.
