No. 14 Women's Volleyball Falls, 3-2, to Brigham Young
Ohio State's Danielle Meyer and Ami Stevens named to the Buckeye Classic All-Tournament Team
CENTERBURG, Ohio - The 14th-ranked Ohio State (7-2) women's volleyball team saw Brigham Young (7-0) win the final three games of the Buckeye Classic championship match to earn a 3-2 (19-30, 30-32, 30-24, 31-29, 15-10) victory Saturday night in a match played at Centerburg High School in Centerburg, Ohio. Lindsy Hartsock scored a team-high 22 points for the Cougars with Chelsea Goodman adding 21.5 and Erica Lott, 21. Hartsock had 20 kills (.500), a solo block and two assist blocks for her points with Goodman collecting a team-high 21 kills and an assist block and Lott adding 19 kills, a solo block and an assist block. OSU's Danielle Meyer (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) scored a match-high 28 points for the Buckeyes with Ami Stevens (So., Centerburg, Ohio) adding 18.5. Meyer produced a match-high 28 kills (.377) in the match while Stevens had 17 kills, an ace serve and an assist block.
Brigham Young hit .310 for the match to .269 for the Buckeyes. OSU edged the Cougars, 82-81 in kills and 3-2 in ace serves. BYU gave up 12 service errors to five for the Buckeyes. Defensively, Brigham Young out dug OSU, 78-77, with BYU's Lindsey Evans and OSU's Stevens sharing match-high honors with 22 digs each. The Cougars had an eight-to-five advantage in team blocks with OSU's Nicole Britenriker (So., Cincinnati, Ohio) recording a match-high four assist blocks. OSU setter Marisa Main (Jr., Louisville, Ky.) recorded a season-high 68 assists in the match while BYU's Amy Schlauder had 56.
OSU overcame a 30-29 BYU lead in game two with a Britenriker kill to tie the game at 30. A BYU error and an Ashley Kiel (Jr., Allenton, Wis.) kill gave OSU a 32-30 win and a 2-0 lead in the match. Trailing 2-1, Brigham Young had a 29-25 lead in game three when the Buckeyes held off three game points and tied the game at 29 with an Amanda Miller (Sr., Littleton, Colo.) kill. A Goodman kill and a Rachel Dyer solo block gave BYU a 31-29 game four win tying the match at two games each. BYU trailed 9-8 in game five but four consecutive point opened a 12-9 lead. A Meyer kill made it 12-10 but three Cougar points closed out the game at 15-10 for the BYU victory.
The Buckeye Classic All-Tournament team included Diana Andreyko (Pittsburgh), Carrie DeMange (Duke), Danielle Meyer (OSU), Ami Stevens (OSU), Lindsey Evans (BYU), Erica Lott (BYU) and Lindsy Hartsock (BYU) (tournament MVP).
Ohio State begins Big Ten Conference play next week when it hosts Purdue (11-0) Friday and Illinois (9-2) Saturday in 7 p.m. matches in St. John Arena.
Duke takes 3-1 victory over Pittsburgh in Buckeye Classic Consolation match
Carrie DeMange has 34 points with 29 kills, two aces and four total blocks
CENTERBURG, Ohio - Duke's Carrie DeMange scored a match-high 34 points as Duke (6-2) captures the third place match of the Buckeye Classic with a 3-1 (32-30, 21-30, 33-31, 30-22) victory over Pittsburgh (7-6). DeMange collected a match-high 29 kills (.339), adding two ace serves, two solo blocks and two assist blocks. Pittsburgh's Diana Andreyko had a team-high 24 points for the Panthers with 23 kills and two assist blocks.
Duke hit .251 in the match to .247 for Pittsburgh. The Blue Devils had an 86-59 margin in kill while Pittsburgh had a six to three edge in ace serves. Duke gave up nine service errors to two for Pitt. Defensively Duke had a 76-61 advantage in digs with Duke's Jenny Shull and Pitts' Megan McGrane each recording 22. The Panthers had an 11 to nine edge in team blocks with Pitts' Jessica Moses collecting a match-high eight with a solo and seven assists. Duke setter Ali Hausfeld recorded 75 assists in the match while Nicole Taurence had 53 for Pittsburgh.
