www.honoluluadvertiser.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050918/SPORTS0203/509180347/1032Shoji Comments: "We just didn't make any plays down the stretch in Game 1 and Game 3," UH coach Dave Shoji said. "It's just baffling why we can't make a play when we've made plays to get into position to win. Obviously we're not handling the pressure of the moment." "When you're close like that but you lose ... even though you're close in the score you're not close to winning those kinds of games when you lose every one of them. I'd say we're a long way off from figuring this out"

Also from the article:
Shoji warned the team, at a somber post-match meeting Victoria Prince described as "nothing like I've seen at UH," that practices would be more competitive beginning tomorrow.
-----
Don't put off till tomorrow what you can do today, my Grandma said. But anyway, the above passage begs the question: were practices not competitive to begin with? That might've been the problem.

First off.... I'm not trying to bash hawaii; but I don't think I agree with the first few statements of this quote. I don't think Hawaii is a physically gifted team. Their primary weekness is at the outside hitter position. Excluding Houston, IMHO NONE of their outside hitters is quick enough.... has a fast arm swing..... or hits hard enough .... to be competitive with the top teams. I think most of them are smart players with high volleyball IQs, but they just don't SEEM to have the physical ability to consistently compete against the top teams.
Again.... I'm not trying to bash Hawaii. I want them to succeed. I'm just not convinced that their current crop of outside hitters has the physical capability to consistently terminate against the top teams.
On a side note..... Prince is amazing! I love watching that girl hit the ball.

This statement pretty much voids your argument. Obviously, you've never seen Tara Hittle play. Hittle is much quicker, has a faster armswing than Houston, and hits hard. Hawai'i fans like Houtson, she will be a good player for Hawai'i but she isn't even Hawaii's best option outside at the moment. Furthermore, Hawai'i has already been competitive with the top teams, including Penn State in Hawai'i with Hittle seeing no front row duty.

Competitive? How can getting continuously beaten by EVERY top team they play, and swept twice, whether home or away, really be called competive? Hawaii's best option at this point is to retreat to the safety and sanctuary of their nice little conference.

Getting beat by Nebraska, Penn State, and Washington is much better than getting swept by Missouri, who isn't a top team, lol ;D Btw, Penn State didn't sweep Hawai'i twice but you wouldn't know this because you're a dunce. I watched Wisconsin vs a banged up UCLA squad, not impressive. Instead of thinking about Hawai'i, you should be more concerned with your own team, you know... the one that had their asses handed to them by Missouri. Speaking of competition, Wisconsin's non conference schedule was a joke!

Not to get involved in this little arguement but I'd love to see HI take on Missouri as I'm not really sure who would win there. Otherwise who can say for certain that Missouri couldn't sweep HI like they did the Badgers? Maybe we'll get to see them play in a regional?

Actually Bik, Mizzou is absolutely a top team...they'll finish ranked in the Top 6-8 in the country by year's end. Sweeping Tennessee and Wisconsin, and beating Texas A&M 3-1 in College Station ain't bad for openers.
And how is losing five games at this point in the season , as Hawaii has done, including three at home, better than losing one at a neutral site?
You know, playing top teams and losing EVERY time is not exactly an endorsement of excellence. While the Wahine should be respected for teeing it up early against some strong clubs (as opposed to last year, when they didn't), every once in a while, don't you think they should probably win a match?
I never said they got swept twice by Penn State, I said they got swept twice, as in two matches....... Heaven's, I am a dunce. After checking I see they've been swept 4 times.
By the way Bik, if you want to make your argument a bit more compelling, you probably should leave out the name-calling. This isn't Romper Room.

Actually, I wouldn't call playing two ranked teams and three of last year's NCAA's participants ( as well as one of your fellow WAC conference mates) a joke, though it doesn't compare favorably to the Wahine's preseason schedule.
But then again, the Big Ten has four other Top 25 teams (not including the Badgers) in the conference schedule, so maybe the urgency to test themselves is not quite as intense. The Wahine will now get to embark on their annual sail through the WAC vacation, and really won't see another ranked team till November.

I've never seen Romper Room. Wolfie, Romper Room was a children's show, that wee ones would watch until they graduated to the more sophisticated Captain Kangaroo.

Tennessee isn't even a ranked team, A &M has been overrated from the start, and Wisconsin hasn't played anybody but a banged up Bruin squad. Fact is nobody knows how good they are or where they'll finish, despite what your crystal ball tells you.
