Ummm I’m only in set 1 and Parra already looks incredible Indeed. But...

Grote: fabulous Wucherer: fabulous (decent serve receive), loved her serving Shaffmaster: good, but will always default to setting the hitter that is closest to her Murr: awesome defense, fair to good serve receive, awesome energy Awoleye: fine, barely noticed her Davis: fine, barely noticed her Hanson: some nice digs and back row attacks, good serving Landfair: one of the worst matches I've ever seen her play
Edit:
I'll add that I thought TCU's serve receive and offensive speed were both fantastic. Really put pressure on the gophers. Too many attach errors. Totally could've pushed it five. Minnesota will do well when they get into a better groove in the back row.

I will add that Wucherer was all offense- fabulous offense but not so much defense.
Shaffmaster struggled with setting off one foot but I was happy to see her well timed dumps. (Edited)
Ditto on Grote and I love the Grote-Hanson combination for right side position. Landfair was off. Not enough middle for my taste but that may be due to passing. I am so happy to have Murr as a Gopher. Go Gophers.
TCU was good but I think it was expected.

Now that I'm home, before I forget, the things I saw tonight. Since most of you have/will hit on the game stuff, I'll naturally point out the not so game related things which caught my attention.
Game Stuffs * I like what the Gophers were trying to do with Hanson in the back row. There were a few times where they'd fake the slide and set Julia up for a red and I enjoyed it. * Some things got changed up mid-match. Serving specialist varied from set to set, and the 6-2 even made a cameo. We would never see any in game tweak like that under Hugh, so it was a nice change of pace * The Gophers may need to get a DS ready for one of the outsides. Based on tonight I'd say Landfair. While she did get a dozen kills, her hitting tonight reminded me more of Adanna Rollins than Taylor Landfair * Speaking of Landfair, Keegan looked pissed when she served her first few past Insomnia Cookies. He went over to Eric Barber (Who is spotting serves) and they obviously adjusted but I saw the look
Non Game Stuffs (that may only interest me) * Maybe game stuff, but our most prolific hitter was Keegan Cook, he hit 1.000 on his challenges tonight! * The TCU bench was definitely enjoying themselves with the dances and celebrations they did. I got a kick out of them, but then again I'm a sassmaster who eats that stuff up. I'd be down to see the Gophers do some of that, but the only girls with enough swag and the right attitude to get those things going would be Elise and Kylie in my opinion. However, they're on the court too much to lead the bench on those things * The highlight of player intros was definitely Phoebe Awoleye trying to throw the mini volleyball into the stands but instead throwing it straight into the cameraman in front of her * The Pav was not packed, which I guess I wasn't surprised by. I saw a lot of posts on FB in the local volleyball groups with people trying to sell their tickets for the game tonight. * Every time I looked at the bench and saw Zeynep she always had this huge, kid in a candy store smile. It seems like she's enjoying herself so far and is probably chompinb at the bit to play * Overheard after the game: A couple of fans in the premium courtside seats complaining that the student section was too rowdy and rambunctious

I don’t think Landfair made a very good starting case for sticking 6 rotations especially when Zeynep is cleared to go, but it is just the first game. However.. If that type of thing were to continue with the passing and the poor dig attempts out of deep 6 several more weeks into the season, Zeynep returning opens up the possibility of her moving to 3-rotations.
Julia Hanson proved in so many ways why she belongs to be on the floor this season (whether in an attacking DS role or pin hitter when called upon).
It’d be really hard to play Landfair over either Hanson and Zeynep (when she becomes eligibile) in the back row if Zeynep truly is an average or above average Big Ten DS at this point in time.

Landair will be kept in the back row for her pipe option even if her serve receive is worse than Wucherer. Zeynep will replace Hanson when she becomes available unless our outsides really suck it up.

* Overheard after the game: A couple of fans in the premium courtside seats complaining that the student section was too rowdy and rambunctious Making just shy of lewd comments about the opposing team's players. Also, drinking and possibly drunk. Based on what Gopher athletes have said, they can't actually hear what the rowdy, rambunctious, or rude fans are saying... which means that it's just the other fans who are forced to listen.

Oh man, I wasn’t close enough to hear but if it’s as you described then I get the gripe.

Something tells me it was the guys in the student section near the locker room? I’m pretty sure they were wrestling team members. I was really happy to see them out supporting the volleyball team but being lewd to the visiting team… yuck. I did see some heckling of servers while watching on tv which I thought was great. But there’s a line that shouldn’t be crossed and I’m not talking about the one Taylor likes to cross lol

I'll admit that I'm probably a stick in the mud, so other people might not have thought it was so bad. (My nearby fans were in agreement, though maybe they're sticks in the mud, too.) I love to see the students (and other student-athletes) come out to cheer on and support the VB team. I don't love it so much when the heckling of servers (and sideline athletes) gets rude and leans lewd.

I’ll admit sometimes I wish the gopher student crowd was more rowdy but no need to be gross. Wasn’t aware of that from my couch. I appreciate that it was you not approving of the behavior against the VISITING team. At northwestern in 2021 I saw some of their male athletes being gross by our bench and didn’t like it but wondered if I was just biased and being a stick in the mud.

I wonder what this match could’ve been if TCU wasn’t missing Nalls and Hall…

I wonder what this match could’ve been if TCU wasn’t missing Nalls and Hall… contrary to what other people might think, I believe if Nalls was available this would’ve gone 5. Granted this minny team was extremely tall which gave them an advantage and they played better defense, but I think there were times where Nalls could’ve taken some of the pressure off of Parra

The Big 12 kills and points leader?? She was TCU’s most important player last season
