Who uses it, and who doesn't? Like/Dislike? Some shorter programs use it to try to get more reach, but the timing sure has to be there. Is it that big of a difference?
I think that Dave Boos instituted swing blocking when he got to Minnesota - are they still using it this year? How about Nebraska or, for that matter, St. Mary's, who is leading the country in blocking, I believe?
One more thing. Melissa Elmer is a machine. I mean, at 6'2", she's not outrageously-sized for an MB, but she's single-handedly putting up numbers better than some teams. Ouch. Must be that Fort Wayne heritage........

How about Nebraska or, for that matter, St. Mary's, who is leading the country in blocking, I believe? I know that St. Mary's uses it. Jon Stevenson implemented it when he was coaching there. He's a McGowanite and it's one of the foundations they teach at the clinics. They're continuing to use it, since Rob Browning took over the program. Rob has worked with the Men's National Team for as long as I can remember (and we all know the men's game uses this technique more then the women's game - although that's been changing the last few years). Who uses it, and who doesn't? Like/Dislike? Some shorter programs use it to try to get more reach, but the timing sure has to be there. Is it that big of a difference? I believe that you need to have a certain level of athleticism in order to pull it off. The team I'm working with now uses it. It's like anything else, some players can execute it well (and should therefore use it), while others are better suited for static blocking (and should use that). I'm not convinced that it's the best technique for all of the players I'm currently working with, but it's not my call so I deal with it. Personally, I always worry about the defense's ability to read properly with the block closing at the last minute (particuarly middle back). However, that all depends upon the VB IQ of your players, so even that isn't an absolute when determining whether or not to use it.

You know what, I sort of take that last comment back. Technically, for individuals, they count every block assist as one block. However, for team stats they take total block assists and divide that in half for total blocks. So my bad. But anyway, she's still raking 'em up. How does Cook manage to squeeze every single ounce of blocking potential from his players? Kropp, Holmquist, Elmer, soon to be Stalls.. (and even Pavan?) Something in the Lincoln water I suppose.

You have two coaches (Cook and Maes) who are very strong in the gym - both train technique exceptionally well.

All I can think about is Heather Bown's senior year when she averaged almos two blocks a game.

Gorf had a block once, but I think he was lying on the floor at the time, so it was kind of a fluke.
Minnesota seems to use all sorts of different blocking techniques--even more so this year.

Geez Louise, it's WOMEN'S COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL!
Blocking? Give me a break...
It doesn't matter what technique you use (short of installing mini-trampolines) for blocking, it WOMEN'S COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL!
Go look at that picture someone posted on the Fresno St. player being dismissed thread. There's a picture of an Arizona player attempting (emphasis on ATTEMPTING) a block. I rest my case.

Right. Because a picture of one poor block is an indication that no one in women's ball can block.

I can think of a bunch of Coaches....
1. Washington (Jim McGlaughlin) 2. BYU (Jason Watson) 3. St. Mary's (Rob Browning) 4. Utah (Mike Wall brought this with him to Utah) 5. Kansas St.? I think...I think she picked it up when McGlaughlin left 6. University of Wyoming 7. Cal State Northridge (Jeff Stork) 8. Cal Poly San Luis
Well maybe a not a bunch...but quite a few..I only know of the guys that stem from McGown/McGlaughlin

Son of Barcelona has just thrown his hat in the ring to challenge Calabria for the dumbest post in the past two weeks. Blocking has absolutely changed the face of Womens College Volleyball. The first criteria to win at the highest levels is that you have to be physical at the net. Man I saw Nebraska, Minnesota PSU, and a few others, and let me tell you they are blocking the ball. We should have an "ESPY" like award show at the end of the season. Barcelona should make plans to be there he has a great chance of winning the "most absurd post". Congrats.
