#1 Wisconsin vs. Arizona | Thursday, September 7, 2023 7:00 PM CDT / 5:00 PM MST | Wisconsin Field House Madison, Wisconsin
|
The 5-0 Wisconsin Badgers start Week 3 by hosting the 3-3 Arizona Wildcats Thursday night at the UW Field House. The Badgers will play Miami on Friday, and Arizona will hang around to face the Hurricanes on Saturday before heading home. Both Wisconsin and Arizona have been playing a bit of Musical Liberos these first two weeks, so we’ll see what lineup we wind up with on either side.

HistoryThe series: Wisconsin leads 2-0. Both matches played on neutral sites. Last meeting: Wisconsin swept Arizona on 8/27/2016 in Honolulu, Hawai’i. Did you know…? If one of the names on Arizona’s roster sounds familiar to Badgers fans, that’s because Wildcats’ 5-8 Junior S/DS Ava Tortorello is the daughter of Badgers Volleyball alum Liz Tortorello (1988-91). Now a BTN commentator, Liz was captain of the 1990 squad that won Wisconsin’s first Big Ten Championship. Ava prepped at the Latin School of Chicago and played club for Adversity Volleyball. Since arriving in Tucson, she’s served as a backup setter & backup libero, and seen game time this year as a serving specialist. She’s majoring in business management, and her favorite non-volleyball pastime is trading stocks.

ava's got a couple sets as libero, couple sets as setter, and more sets as a serving specialist so far this season. who knows what role she'll be in on thursday, but whatever it is, she's always a burst of energy! looking forward to the "musical liberos" game continuing in the field house. maybe we'll get a libero change for both teams mid-match!

She's also one of the most vocal leaders on the team. She may not play as much as she likes but she is one of those kids who does things that need to be done. As for her mom, Liz has been a great supporter of Arizona volleyball. A year or so ago, someone in the program told me that she was Arizona’s No. 1 fan. Ava's aunt was also a B1G setter. Penn State. As for the match, Arizona plays this kind of non-conference game about every other year. In 2021, it was at No. 1 Texas after Dave didn't like the start time offered at a tournament at Texas State. Arizona lost 3-1 but played really well that day. Probably the best match of the season for the Wildcats. In 2019, it was a neutral site against No. 2 Nebraska. Another 3-1 loss in which the Wildcats presented themselves well. I think this Wildcat team might have been good enough for the NCAA Tournament but had a huge rash of injuries, including several concussions, that had everyone playing out of position. Both liberos (Martin and Hiapo) played left side at points during the season because the pins all dealt with injury. It was really an unfortunate season. In 2016, Arizona played at Wisconsin in their only previous match. Badgers won in straights. I talk to Rita today because the match is earlier in the week. Won't get players, unfortunately. I will write something up no later than tomorrow.

I was there and it was incredible. it was like we were searching for that level every match after that and never could reach it again. if we could’ve gotten more from Puk that game, I think we push it 5. we might’ve given Logan her worst career game ever. I remember vividly Zyonna roofing Skylar Fields and then Logan Eggleston back-to-back points. if anyone can tell me any other player that’s ever done that, I’d love to hear it LOL

We’d told Sheff when he started at Wisco that we should play a tournament at the SSC and promised we’d be there when they did. Luckily I had been traveling a ton for work and had frequent flyer miles for days. Admittedly I do not remember a ton about the AZ match itself. Anyway, super glad to have them coming to the Field House!

I am just glad this is on real TV. I'm tired of ESPN+. 😂

Has anyone seen who will be the announcers for FS1? A quick google search was not helpful.

Wisconsin also beat Arizona 3-1 in College Station in 2003 in the NCAA Tournament first round. If memory serves, both teams were ranked in the 20s.

I dropped this in the Arizona thread because I came across it first, but it's more relevant here. I talked to Rita yesterday morning. The team left today around 4:30 a.m. MST. Getting used to that Big 12 travel schedule a year early.

I always forget that Rita is Jade Demps’ godmother. What a cool connection.

Game day bump. After missing the home opener I can't wait to see this team in person!
