Purdue came out to play! Hudson appeared not at full speed earlier in the match but was ripping them towards the end. Anderson connections need work but that's getting better. I don't think she'll leave the floor from here on out.

Set 3 UCF up 20-17: chicoine not called on a throw At 21-18 chicoine not whistled for straight down tap from over the net before ball is in the plane
I would have liked to see a 4 th set or Purdue try to come back from 17-23
How many degrees of arc can you maintain contact before it’s a throw?

Not sure if you were there but I was. Ball did not physically pause and change location. Thought it was fine. Not so outlandish to call. 23-17 is a lot but for a Purdue team that has been waxed in a lot of sets they were still down 19-14 and 17-11 at one point. I would say those are pretty eventful comebacks.

Not sure why your live presence trumps my repeated rewind play and pausing these two plays
In general refs are too lenient re. ‘Throws’ imo
I also thought the ball sorta rolled off her fingertips as it had some very low rpm side and back spin
Until there is slow motion replay available it isn’t clear i blew up the replay on my computer and can confirm the above comment
And it doesn’t matter given where the line is currently drawn I will maintain that new viewers to the sport will be confused by this state of interpretation and tightening it up would be better for the sport
I do not understand what pause and change direction have to do with maintaining contact 10 or 15 degrees of arc in an arm swing
Full disclosure: long time fan/student of the game, former club (men’s) setter, never a ref

It's not a violation to tap the ball straight down in that situation. You can contact the ball before it crosses the plane after the 3rd contact (That is the preferred outcome for blockers), and after the second contact if the ball is coming over the net (again, blockers can equally cross the plane on an attack on 2). If the ball is coming over the net (in the up refs opinion), it is an attack and the blocker can intercept it before it crosses the plane as long as they don't interfere with the attacking team (usually the setter) playing the ball a third time before it crosses the plane. There was no such interference on this play, so it was legal.

Refs are not calling it at all.
