Just finished watching the replay and here’s my two cents:
- This team looks comfortable, much more than they did at the VNL’s. We may disagree with KK’s decisions, but I think a more consistent group with greater chemistry is what we’re working towards now, and this was the smoothest the A squad has played all summer so far.
- Service pressure was solid, especially from JT, Dana, and Chi
- KRob looked really good. She makes smart shots and can adjust to wonky sets, and she’s a solid consistent passer in any rotation. I know she has her critics here on VT but I get why she’s starting. I do think it would be stronger to pair her with a more terminal OH - she and Larson play too similar IMHO. I’d like to see what a KRob/Plummer or KRob/Frantti starting pairing could do. Tipping so often isn’t going to work as well against teams with stronger blocks/floor defense.
- Dana also looks really good out there. Another player with vocal critics, but I think she’s a great addition to the A squad. She looked faster on closing the block, and even when she’s not roofing hitters she’s getting productive block touches, attacking super efficiently, and delivering some of the strongest serves on court.
- Back row defense was okay but not really tested today. A couple of times they looked slow and stuck on their heels, letting some tips fall that shouldn’t have. I wonder if Hentz should start over JWO (not likely to happen given her being captain and KK’s track record, but I’d like to see more Hentz on the court for sure).
- Carlini looked so comfortable out there. Much stronger connections. The slide connection with Chi needs some work still but overall she’s much improved. Looks like Hancock might’ve given her some tips about being more offensive as well.
A solid, clean start but lots more volleyball ahead. Can’t wait to see what happens!

Im impressed with Carlini's connection with Chi and how it has improved. There was that one-hand set to chi that was absolutely gorgeous in set 2. The team looks good on SR, Serving, passing, floor defence, and offence (obviously not really tested much). However, to be nitpicky Larson and Carlini both need to work on their blocking. When larson turns her block into the court, her arms get really close together and she ends up taking up not a lot of space and gets tooled. Carlini just needs to position herself on the net better, just gets tooled unnecessarily IMO.

Just watched the match. It's good to see the team LOOKING good, even if it's against a weaker opponent.
The level of competition should ramp up as the week goes on.
Big matches are vs. Italy and Poland (at home) towards the end.

I believe this lineup is the best if we see those types of numbers out of the middle and if/when our opposites decide to be a bit more terminal. Huge weakness right now, imo.

I'm with you concerning JT looking all kinds of off. Over running sets and landing quite awkwardly, which is scary. It's like she wants an even faster set. I recall back in 2019 and at Tokyo that JT was automatic in Ro.1. She can't buy a kill in that rotation now which is concerning since K.Cook is the other option at the right pin. I just hope KK keeps everyone, except for probably Carlini on a short leash. If they aren't playing well, make subs. He probably won't though until it's too late, as usual.

Just watched replay.
Carlini looked rock solid. Plummer's first kill off the bench was a rocket, and she didn't shank (though she only passed like 3 balls). Larson looked lackluster, and it's been mentioned before, but JT still has a weird contact / lands way leaning back. Did she have this issue during italian league finals?

We dream of Thompson getting back her level at those Finals... we shall some more...

So folks here seem happy with Carlini's performance. Question is, will we see her in Paris?

So folks here seem happy with Carlini's performance. Question is, will we see her in Paris? with the plague of injuries to the setting position - it’s her starting role to lose now. I think that’s why she looks so comfortable and solid out there - having the ability to play free without having to worry about Evans, Dilfer, Gray, or Hilley from sneaking in “take her spot” has to give her some confidence. I’m still holding out hope that we see Poulter back in italy (sooner rather than later) giving her the time to get up to speed and rejoin team USA? maybe?
