Correct me if I’m wrong… but didn’t Iowa take Purdue and Penn state to 5 last season? Not sure, but I do recall the 2016 Gophers winning a 5-setter in Iowa City too.

Correct me if I’m wrong… but didn’t Iowa take Purdue and Penn state to 5 last season? You should’ve been around in 2018. We went 7-13 in conference (all vacated wins now) and lost 5 of those 13 matches in 5. The committee named us as one of the first 4 out of the tournament, along with Maryland. 3 of the 4 of our last matches were 2-3 losses to Indiana, Purdue, and Maryland. That was a really devastating season. Iowa has a long history of moral victories.

I love that zero people in the poll picked Minnesota in 5...

What did they say earlier? Iowa hasn't beaten Minn since 1996? September 22, 1995. A day shy of 28 years Yup. The year before I started watching the Gophers. I’m not gonna say that this streak is solely due to my being a Gopher fan, but… the numbers don’t lie!

Correct me if I’m wrong… but didn’t Iowa take Purdue and Penn state to 5 last season? Yes. They had Purdue on the ropes at Purdue in 5. Against Penn State they lost 15-13 in the 5th. They lost to Iowa State this year in 5. They won the 1st 2 sets and had match point in the 3rd for a sweep, the got reversed. They compete. When they get the talent and experience, I see a future for the Hawks.

I would have rather had Iowa if they weren't going to give it to Maryland/North Texas.

We had two back to back 7-13 seasons. 2018 it maybe could’ve worked out if we didn’t have that abysmal end to the season.

1. Iowa isn't thawed butter you just slice through. 2. MN had good spirit 3. Urquhart is a VERY gifted server and exposed a reception pattern that did not include our MB 'hidden' on the left. 4. Shaff's OOS sets to Wookie are too predictable. If they were wider she could tool down the line, and only once did she try to end the run with a back row attack. 5. MN serve reception continues to be a work in progress but I think progress is being made. 6. Davis has to compensate for her not being 6'5" and work on the keys to diagnosing the coming attack. 7. MN made a better effort to activate the middle: 16 6 33 8. Buettner, their 'horse', made an adjustment in the second set to go 'line' to GOOD effect. 9. Unlike the fifth set vs. Creighton, MN came right out and owned the floor. 10. TayLa let out the clutch. That contributed to this fan's sense of relief and, maybe I'm projecting, something similar for the team. 11. Wookie's jump topspin can make a big difference over time. Much higher point of contact leads to a better angle of attack and repetitive tweaking of her mechanics will eventually reduce SEs.
anyway, for those who care for examinations, a point by point anatomy of the second set loss vs Iowa IA with 9 kills, 4 Aces, 2 blocks MN with 6 HEs, 3 SEs, and their 2nd point where we couldn't get the ball over the net.
SE very tight pass poorly handled SE Buettner kill down the line. first one. MN block had been camped on xcourt until she could show line ability Ace Urquhart on very short serve to Murr who overpassed out of bounds HE Landfair's good pass, Shaff good set, Grote HE: sharp xcourt did not land in Landfair unable to handle a deep attack Wookie unable to handle a deep attack going out...probably trying to save a presumed touch McSweeny on back slide, Davis not there but might not have mattered Left pin kill over Davis who was late to leap McSweeny over Davis in middle HE Wookie missed high hands Buettner kill off Grote down the line 13- 13 Landfair, covering a block of Wookie, overpasses for IA tapdown SA Urquhart ace, very short, at Phoebe's right. HE Landfair long on PIPE Ace Urquhart's 3rd ace of set, very short that Murr couldn't get to Block Wookie blocked: Murr's pass, which she had to play at near shoulder height, was behind attack line so ----only one option. Set was 6' off net but neither inside nor outside and Wookie had almost no angle to avoid ----block. Phoebe could have made herself available for a difficult gap but she was out of position and not ----available. That positioning could be corrected to give IA MB something to think about. Ace Urquhart aces Landfair HE Wookie misses high hands 20-13 ---------Crowl subs Grote. Phoebe comes across to pass yet another very short serve and Shaff takes the --pass floating behind the attack line, backsets nicely for Crowl termination. WHEW YIKES
Blocke Phoebe blocked on back slide, a slow developing play HE Wookie: Landfair pass 4' behind attack line, Shaff sets to Wookie whose xcourt attack sails wide. [imo, better -----to attack than offer a free ball] SE Wookie topspin jump serves into bottom of net McSweeny back slide kill.. Davis cannot get there. [IA setter tendency on 3pt pass in that lineup was to go --to McSweeny. Maybe Davis should be tracking her rather than waiting to diagnose the set's direction] HE Landfair actually attacks an OOS pass and set into the net.

Last year I remember thinking that all they need is a signature win over a top team and this year I’m thinking they might be able to do it! Just very happy it wasn’t against MN tonight 😅 I really like Barnes and he seems to be building a good team culture. I’m happy he has a few more offensive weapons this year and he’s built some solid back row defense, definitely frustrated the Gophs quite a few times. Hats off to the Hawkeyes

Minnesota with 32 more kills than Iowa... 33 (76-43) according to the stats-thing. Somewhat deceiving stat. MN dominated & won Sets 1, 3 & 5 by a combined 29 pts. IA won sets 2 & 4 by a combined 7 pts.

Probably a bad joke; my bad. I guess I just don’t understand the logic of using every player except Z. Is the backup setter really better defensively than her? I just don’t get it 🤷🏼♂️ Wasn’t Z playing at a pretty high level? It’s odd we had to go to a different country to find someone to sit the bench. Oh well rant over. I'm not sure what level she was playing, but I think she practiced with high level players. I have no idea why she's not on the court , and I doubt we will ever know unfortunately. She came here for academics too, not just volleyball. She has only played two sets vs High Point and to me seemed nervous and had a couple of errors. So IDK, I'm just speculating that maybe the coaching staff is going to red shirt her this year so she'll have 4 full years at libero.

She can't redshirt if she's played, unless it ends up being a medical redshirt which I never hope for anyone

Good news, Landfair 18k .403 18 kills in 5 sets? oof! EDIT: I would have expected more from her in 5 sets Are you trolling? If your outside hits over .400, I'd say that's pretty good.
