Wisconsin vs. Indiana | Sunday, Sept. 24, 2023 1 PM Central | UW Field House Madison, Wisconsin
|
The first home conference match each year is Steve Lowe Day, where we honor the late coach who brought Wisconsin our first Big Ten Volleyball Championship. Will the Hoosiers' serve spoil the celebration? Or will the Badgers prevail on this special day?

Did you know…? Sixty-six years ago on this day, September 24, 1957, President Dwight D. Eisenhower invoked the Insurrection Act of 1807, enabling federal troops to perform domestic law enforcement duties, and sent the 101st Airborne Division of the US Army into Little Rock, Arkansas, to escort nine Black students to class at Central High. The day before, the President had federalized the 10,000-member Arkansas National Guard, removing it from the control of Arkansas' governor, Orval Faubus, who had previously ordered the Guard to blockade Central High and prevent the Black students from entering. The Guard, under the command of Eisenhower, subsequently joined the 101st Airborne in protecting the students. Arkansas National Guardsmen preventing Black students from entering Little Rock Central High School, August 1957The "Little Rock Nine," as they were known, had enrolled at Central - the high school closest to their homes - for the fall according to the school district's plan for gradual desegregation in response to the Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court case that barred school segregation. The NAACP had selected these students to be the first Black Central High students on the basis of their excellent grades and attendance. They were Ernest Green (b. 1941), Elizabeth Eckford (b. 1941), Jefferson Thomas (1942–2010), Terrence Roberts (b. 1941), Carlotta Walls LaNier (b. 1942), Minnijean Brown (b. 1941), Gloria Ray Karlmark (b. 1942), Thelma Mothershed (b. 1940), and Melba Pattillo Beals (b. 1941). Paratroopers from the 101st Airborne escorting Black students into the Central High buildingBy the end of September 1957, the students were attending Central High under military protection, but white students subjected them to daily physical and verbal abuse. One group of students threw acid into Melba Pattillo's eyes; another group trapped her in a bathroom stall and attempted to set her on fire. Minnijean Brown was suspended after cafeteria harassment caused her to drop her lunch tray, spilling soup on the white boys who had been tormenting her. Later that year, a group of girls threw a purse filled with padlocks at Minnijean; she responded by calling them "white trash," and was immediately expelled for it. Elizabeth Eckford walking into school, followed by a group of white students yelling racial slursBrown's expulsion and the graduation of Ernest Green in the spring of 1958 left seven remaining Black students at Central High. They intended to continue on at Central High the following year, but Governor Faubus ordered that all Little Rock public schools be closed rather than integrated. The schools remained closed for the 1958-59 school year, and most of the remaining students either moved out of state with their families or earned their high school displomas via correspondence. When the Little Rock schools reopened the following year, the remaining two Black students of Central High, Jefferson Thomas and Carlotta Walls, returned to increased abuse and violence. They both graduated in the spring of 1960. Ernest Green preparing for his graduation in May 1958

I just watched the standard BIG 10 5 minute highlight clip from Badgers at Indiana last year; 3-0 sweep. Nothing new to see: Indiana served big on occasion and The Badgers pounded some balls off the floor.
Jade played in the match; saw more of her than Anna. I'm still kind of bummed about her transfer. I'm definitely not complaining about the current Badger team, but the 5th set of the 2021 Championship still looms large in my memory. It's too bad Jade couldn't remain a Badger for the duration of her career.
In the here and now, I'm feeling bullish about The Badgers. I'll say serve away Indiana; Badgers 3-0.

Jade played in the match; saw more of her than Anna. CC's broken finger meant Smrek moved to MB and Jade was MJ's 6-2 opposite partner. (And while we're at it, we also played that match without GG; tweeked hamstring. Frank was aced 6 times, Bramschreiber 4, and Orzol 3.)

...
I was a student in the LR public schools in the 1970s & 80s. They were still trying, and failing, to figure out desegregation. They did employ a lot of school bus drivers, though. And now back to volleyball.

I was not expecting Indiana to have a 3-2 lead in neutral site matches

Excited to watch this one. Indiana is a lot less error prone this season and serving tough. Hard playing AT Wisco but I’m hoping for a competitive match

Excited to watch this one. Indiana is a lot less error prone this season and serving tough. Hard playing AT Wisco but I’m hoping for a competitive match I mean, it's the #1 team in the country vs. Indiana. The Hoosiers can hope to get them out of system with their serves, but serving consistently tough in that huge field house has to be very tough for visiting teams. Saris' passing has really improved, which the team will need. Kjolhede has been great, but I wonder what's up with Geddes? In this IU echo chamber I'm in on this board, would anyone happen to know? Did she just lose her spot to Alonso-Corcelles? The Haworth-Tatum connection could get stronger, as Tatum is the one Hoosier who can really bring the heat and fire. I like the way she gets the team pumped. Overall, the Illinois match highlighted some definite improvements in defense in both blocking and digging for IU (hi Ramsey and Isa!). Hopefully they will show up today, even though Wisconsin is a tall task, literally. Finally, I wonder if it's a UW blowout, if Fickell will get in the game.

Badger fans are 'traumatized' by the match at the Field House last year. Indiana had a 21-13 lead in the 4th set, on the verge of taking it to five sets before UW stormed back to win it at 26-24. Indiana's strength matches up with UW's weakness, and that makes us nervous.

I know hoosier fans won't understand this, but this match is a really good test for the badgers. It's Indiana's strength against the badgers weakness. There is arguably not a more aggressive and effective serving team in the country than Indiana. I'm as much interested in how the badgers handle the serve as in whether they win or not. I think the hoosier defense could get the badgers frustrated too. The badgers can't get in their own heads when they get frustrated. I'll be surprised if there are not quite a few touch periods for the badgers today.
