Wisconsin vs. Ohio State | Wednsday, Sept. 27, 2023 8 PM ET / 7 PM CT | Covelli Center Columbus, Ohio
|
In the second week of Big Ten play, Ohio State returns home to host Wisconsin on a Wednesday night. Wisconsin, so far undefeated in conference, comes off of sweeps of Northwestern and Indiana. Ohio State split last week, having been swept by Nebraska before turning around and sweeping Iowa. It's a new-look Buckeye team with only two primary returners from last year: middle blocker Rylee Raider and pin hitter Emily Londat, who's moved from the right pin to the left. They will face a veteran Badgers team with only two new faces: outside hitter Temi Thomas-Ailara and middle blocker Carter Booth. Will the Buckeyes prevail at home? Or will the Badgers continue their winning ways?

HistoryThe Series: Wisconsin leads 43-39 In Madison: Wisconsin leads 21-19 In Columbus: Wisconsin leads 20-18 Neutral: Tied 2-2 The Streak: Wisconsin has won two in a row. Last Meeting: Wisconsin won in four sets on 11/26/22 in Columbus. Did you know…? Jerrie Mock, the first woman to fly solo around the world, was one of the first women aeronautical engineering students at Ohio State, which she attended from 1943-45. Her career as a pilot began at age 4, when she took her first airplane ride. "I decided that would be the way to see the world," she said. "I would grow up, and I would fly my airplane around the world. Everyone laughed at me, and I laughed right back at them." Her historic flight began and ended at Ohio's John Glenn Columbus International Airport (then known as the Port Columbus Airport) in the spring of 1964 - it took just under a month. Piloting a single engine Cessna 180 Skywagon officially named The Spirit of Columbus but known as "Three-Eight Charlie," Mock experienced bad weather, brake failure, and radio transmission problems. Her route took her from Columbus to Bermuda, the Azores, Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, India, Thailand, the Philippines, Guam, Wake Island, Hawaii, California, Arizona, Texas, Kentucky, and finally back to Columbus. After she landed, she jotted down some thoughts for the Columbus Dispatch, which had sponsored her flight: "I find myself now trying to assess what I feel, aside from any records or aviation achievements. I think it's this. When I was a just a little girl, I used to be thrilled when I'd read about things like this, not a flight specifically but something like this. Always I had the feeling that I was supposed to do something special, that I must, really. So now I have."

Well with Ohio State losing so many seniors it was bound to be a tough year. And even though they lost seven straight, all of them were to ranked teams a brutal schedule considering all the freshman. If the Badgers play to their strengths they should be able to take care of the win in 3 sets. If the Buckeyes are defeated as expected this will be the L that will knock them from the Top 25. I mean a 4 win 8 loss team does not deserve that high of a ranking.

Ohio State player to watch: Emily Londot, senior Londot has flourished as she’s shifted from her home on the right side her first three seasons to the left side. The powerful 6-foot-3 Londot leads the Big Ten with 4.76 kills per set, good for sixth nationally. She was the Big Ten Player of the Week the opening week of the season, when she had a season-high 26 kills against Bowling Green, three shy of her career high set last year against Minnesota. The move to the left side has created more opportunities for Londot, who is averaging 11.85 attempts per set compared with 9.65 last season.
I guess it still boils down to Londot + Rylee Rader = not enough to beat The Badgers.

If UW go into Columbus and assume this will be a cakewalk? It could be a trap match! JFO will have her squad ready.

I personally think this has "trap match" written all over it for Wisco, and we'll get to see how they play against a team that pushes them on the road. I'm going OSU in four, but also acknowledge OSU may not score 20 in a set.
So, Wisco may win or they may lose. Groundbreaking commentary, I know.

My head says Wisconsin dominates, but my heart says Londot drops a 30 piece McNugget and imparts her judgment upon humanity

My head says Wisconsin dominates, but my heart says Londot drops a 30 piece McNugget and imparts her judgment upon humanity I certainly hope not, but I was popping off on The BIG thread yesterday just for funsies so I get it. Got to do that once in a while:
Change of pace topic. The Huskers are hitting the road this weekend, back to back at Purdue, then Indiana. That has the potential to be a tough trip. I'm going out on a limb to predict the first L for the Huskers this weekend. I'd like to be more specific, but I keep waffling between tough serving / good floor defense from Indiana v. big hitting from Purdue for the win. Anyway, one L for the Huskers this weekend. I will be back to take my lumps if The Huskers prove me wrong.

It seems that every OSU thread this year against the top of the conference is going to be the fans of the other team saying that they have more talent, but OSU has shown fight or played well against us the last few years without having seen much of them this year. Then that team will easily sweep OSU because they cannot pass and Emily is the only credible threat at OH or Opp.
I think there is a chance OSU gets one of the top 5 this year (I thought for sure before Egan went down), but I would be stunned if it is the Badgers. Hitting junk balls, and with OSU's passing there will be a lot of running sets out to the left, against their block is not a recipe for success. If JFO puts DS, 5'9" Sydney Taylor at OH and she has to attempt to block Smrek or Robinson, I can be home by 9:30

Watched OSU in person last Friday in Lincoln. Not sure the line-up is settled and Rader seems have an undefined role. One thing is clear, their freshman have B1G level skills. They are just young. One thing that I did find amusing is when I was talking with a Columbus media person he told me, he thought the Buckeye freshman would be much improved in 5 or 6 weeks and thought if they played Nebraska then, the match would be closer…. As if the Nebraska freshman won’t be vastly improved in by then too? 😏... I doubt they can take a set from Wisconsin, but if Wisconsin isn’t focused they are good enough to do so.
Worth watching. We’ll see🏐
