...and it doesn't work. UCLA sweeps Hawaii 4-0 (time called as UCLA had the match). Only flight to get a win was the 2's. 3's made it kinda close. Looks like big problems in the lower flights. Is Napolean really a #4? Wasn't she playing at the 1's before she left for UCLA?

That wasn't a great team though, and where the program's struggles began. Wagoner also spent most of her time playing 2's--now can't buy a win at 4's and 3's.

Bows add a junior college transfer for next season, Tessa Marocco (5’9”) from Irvine Valley College. She is currently 3-3 at IVC this season playing at the 1’s. Last season she was named All-OEC Second Team playing at the 3’s. On the indoor court she is a two-time All-OEC First Team member and was All-OEC Co-MVP in 2022. She led her team in points and kills per set both years. http://instagram.com/p/C3wR45arAT_ 2023 Beach Highlights

So Hawaii won three flights the whole tourney? Just 2. The 4's vs. LMU and the 1's vs. Stanford. They do seem competitive in the 1's. It's hard to tell in the 2's and 3's without Thelle. 5's got swept no matter who they put in there.

Bows may not have won many flights but Beach volleyball was the winner - lots of great matches, some unexpected results and overall a fantastic few days of competition showcasing some of the best athletes in NCAA beach volleyball. Great job UH coaches and staff on hosting a great event. While Hawaii may not have won many flights they were close on many occasions (a few points against LMU would have lead to a different outcome) and pretty sure they won most of the 6’s for the weekend which shows some depth.

Lots of season to go, but an 0-5 start is brutal.
Santer/Glagau/Maidment and Napoleon (who transferred back from UCLA) are the final Jeff Hall recruits I believe. I know there was controversy surrounding him, but he took UH to 3rd and 4th place finishes in the NCAAs and the team was loaded with talent year in and out.
I know the COVID-Hall firing-Ljunquist hiring-Ljunquist resigning-Evan interiming-Will Ljunquist come back or not-OK Evan is our coach was ... a lot. But the sad part is Power 5 has taken over Beach Volleyball and other non-Power 5s like GCU and LMU have built their programs. LBSU IMO has potential as well.
All the uncertainty in the program the last three seasons has allowed the sport and other schools to get considerably farther than UH.
I wonder if Hawaii will end up like a Pepperdine? But hey, Pepperdine at least won a national title. Really interested to see if Evan can pick up recruiting... lots of talent gone after this year.

Like I said in an earlier comment, it appears that the Beach team is headed in the same trajectory as the indoor team, once highly ranked year in and year out, and now the indoor team isn't ranked anymore...so sad....

Hard to compare the two programs given the short history of Beach Volleyball. This program looks like a quick down turn while the indoor was a slow burn. Still, point taken.

Yeah it literally happened overnight. They went from their best team ever--ranked #1/2 during the COVID season that was cut short--to barely Top 10 in one year and (so far) unable to recover. The top beach recruits are now going to the same programs. And you have schools like Texas now throwing big money into the sport.

This could be a trend. All the P5 schools will hog all the talent and leave other non P5 schools to get the scraps. It was bound to happen….just like our Wahine indoor team. We were at the top or near the top for a while. After women volleyball caught on nation wide, all the big schools started to load up on the talent and widen the gap between the P5 and G5 schools.
Beach is headed that way. LMU is up there now but we will see how long LMU can hang with the big dogs in years to come. We are not getting many Cali kids, instead we are trying to compete by going international. It may take a while for UH to get all the top international kids to come and build a program heavy on overseas talent.

Yeah... that 2020 team was Hawaii's best shot at a title (although that year there was still lots of great team). Ridiculously talented From Flight 1-5.

In indoor, you can get a superstar player that can take you pretty far in the tournament. In beach, you can have a superstar player, but they only affect things the same amount as everyone else. 1/10th. We need to at least be at the top of G5's. We need to be where LMU is at or Grand Canyon or at least at the top of the Big West. I don't know what the local beach club vball is like on the islands but hopefully it's healthy so we can get top local recruits.
