Last Meeting: Wisconsin swept the Buckeyes on 9/27/23. Did you know…? Ohio State coach Jen Flynn Oldenburg has coached three of the Badgers middle blockers before. In 2019, she was an assistant coach with the USAV GYNT that won gold at the FIVB Girls’ U18 World Championship in Cairo, Egypt. On that roster were Caroline Crawford, Devyn Robinson, and Carter Booth from Wisconsin. Two Buckeyes were on the roster, also: Emily Londot and Sydney Taylor. Two additional Badgers were at that tournament, on the other side of the net: Anna Smrek, representing Canada, and Gülce Güçtekin, representing Türkiye.

I know everyone thinks this will be relatively easy for UW, but we have thought that before when OSU comes to town. There is a bit a history of the buckeyes surprising the badgers.
They've had a little more time to prepare for the 5-1, which I think the badgers will still be running. I think it's still too soon after MJs injury. Izzy did well enough blocking against Maryland and Rutgers, but Londot swinging on the left over Ashburn could pose some real problems, depending on how the rotations match up. Something to watch.

My big concern is Londot versus Izzy's 5-11 block.

My big concern is Londot versus Izzy's 5-11 block. We likely will not be lining up Izzy against Londot. That honor will go to Smrek.

This raises a question about a blind spot that may have been answered in the past, but I don't remember. Does either team know the rotation the other team starts in ahead of time? Is it a situation like hockey where home team gets the last change? Or are both coaches guessing what the other will do?

But I wondered about it due to other comments on this thread.

Is it a situation like hockey where home team gets the last change? Or are both coaches guessing what the other will do? both coaches are guessing Each coach submits a lineup/rotation, per set. The order can be changed per set - a coach can 'spin the dial' in hopes of getting a more favorable set of matchups. When a team has a dominant player - eg. Rettke, or Londot for Ohio State Wednesday - it's a pretty good bet that their coach will set the lineup to maximize that player's time on the court, on the front row. So for Wednesday, Sheffield can assume Londot will start at front left, and set his rotation to have Smrek front row for the first three rotations to defend her (which is also his usual starting rotation anyway). (Uw vs Nebraska on Saturday will be more of a chess match/guessing game between Sheffield and Cook.) (adding, in Dennis Punzel's book about the 2021 season, etc. there is a good bit of discussion about the decisions about lineup and starting rotation that Cook and Sheffield made during the championship match, and I know that Cook has said his decision to 'spin the dial' for the 5th set was a mistake that trapped him in the rotation where Demps reeled off the six points on serve that essentially decided the match.)

both coaches are guessing Thanks. That's what I thought. But I wondered about it due to other comments on this thread. Some coaches also don't care about matchups-rotations with the other team, they'll just start in where they think THEY are the best regardless of opponent. There was one year where USC started in the exact same rotation of every set like nearly the entire season Bricio's senior year.

Just a heads up for OP that Lauren Murphy is actually OSU's other OH. Chelsea Thorpe is our RS.
I want to know who voted for OSU in a sweep. Are they anti Wisconsin, because I don't think any OSU fan could be watching this team right now and expecting to win a set.
