They need the follower numbers... a lot of those old timers have big numbers.
From the sandcast interview it soundly like this is a proof if concept and once the video goes up they need big numbers so they can market this as at least an annual event and hopefully a tour with multiple stops, at that point the younger players will take over but they will need to keep putting up numbers because that is what the sponsor revenue needs to stay flowing.

It's still a solid field for a "beta" exhibition event, but he he really wants to make this truly a competitive league with the best pro players, you probably don't want to have a bunch of players approaching 50. I also liked his idea of having individual owners/sponsors that would draft its players. Presumably these owners would want players who can help them win. They'll still need to structure the event to give incentives for the teams to build the strongest team possible, not just putting all your buddies together. |

I have been speculating for a couple of years now that the stipend would be around $2k. No player has ever posted to confirm or deny that, until now. The sad part is that I don't think Savvy or Evan will ever been even within sniffing distance of top 6 to get that stipend.
Good news is that Scoles and Flint will be top6 whenever the next 6 month evaluation is at USAV, if it hasn't happenec already.

I think entertaining is fine for a one-off event, but if he wants to make it any kind of regular series or league, actual competition where the teams are really trying to win is a must. I don’t think a bunch of unconnected exhibitions will have much long term appeal. Having it be a competitive league would certainly keep interest in it, but I don't think they would have any problem regularly doing these one offs as long as they were consistent (once or twice a month) and content was made out of them like the McKibbins do with their 4man's. Those that can't be there will go back and watch later were you have an opportunity to monetize it even more by selling ads and sponsorships via the teams as a presenting partner or something. We see this exploding in the golf content world right now where everyone and their mother that has a camera and a website is making golf mashup videos with the likes of everyone from celebrities, to athletes, to popular social media personalities. |

Playoffs tomorrow will also be streamed live on the Emerald Coast Facebook Page and have play by play by Ken Marshall. FUDs 4s is Old school Side Out on a big court with no let serves. |

I get your point about the older players and their followers, although I'd question whether just getting the one with the most, wouldn't reach the same people as getting all of them. But I think the underlying assumption is false and I think its an assumption that the AVP and most of these other tours make also. That the product is so fundamentally sound, that the only challenge is getting people to look at it, after which they will be hooked and will continue to watch. I think we have seen through the years that this is simply not the case. Take the McKibben's fours videos. I didn't watch all of any of them, so this could be wrong, but they were generally non-competitive. By that I mean, I looked at the list of players on teams and knew who would win. (Here I am thinking specifically of the one they organized by Hawaii v Texas v California but the NBA one was pretty clear after the first few points too). I watched parts because I was curious, then didn't watch the rest because the product was poor. Badly matched teams, so-so athletes (I think half the players were pros), and they didn't seem to know how to play 4s (or maybe the conventional wisdom on that has changed since the old days. The camera tricks and replays were fine, but didn't add that much for me. This one will have the same problem. Rosie hasn't played in years, Gibb is almost 50, and the team isn't even built for 4s. Nick was terrible when last I saw him and hasn't been gone long enough for a nostalgia bump (and even when they do the nostalgia matches with Sinjin and Randy, I only watch a few points). I may watch 5 minutes, but its very hard to imagine watching a full match of pros and retired pros giving 70% effort at a version of the game they aren't particularly good at or well suited for. Not sure what the Venn diagram of fans they are hoping for is but I am certain anyone who cares enough to post on a beach message board must be in it and the fact that so many are dubious raises a lot of questions |
