Fun weekend. Nice job by AAU and JVA on this event. It was a lot smoother this year than last year.
This is the type of event that people love on the girls side and it was executed well.

Agreed. This was my first year at this event, but compared to other events I thought it was run very well!

I'll +1 onto the positive experience and the weather was great compared to last year. 18 Open is going to be interesting this year. Lot's of three set games in the gold bracket and Balboa Bay 18's got knocked out by Pulse in the quarterfinals.
My only issue was that T-Mobile internet service was non-existent in the hall. I was able to stream games on Saturday/Sunday because the convention center had an open wifi for one of the conventions. Unfortunately, that got turned off just after 9AM on Monday and at that point, my phone was in SOS mode until I walked towards the front door. Thankfully, we were able to get minimal signal on a Verizon phone so we could stream our last game. Even then, that wasn't very stable. We've ben to McCormick a bunch of the past 3 or 4 years and it's never been that bad. This was worse than the Orlando convention center and it's always bad.

Yes! I'm on T-mobile and always showed full bars, but other than texting, nothing worked. It was so frustrating. I'd love to see a real Wifi solution at these tournaments.

Interested to see how the Milwaukee teams do (15 up). High school season just finished on Sat (11/4) with club tryouts on Sun/Mon. Maybe the teams will have one practice together before the weekend? Didn’t seem to set MKE Sting 16-1s back last year who finished runner up in this event with the same circumstances. MKE Sting 17-1 (last years 16's) proved tough again earning a Bronze, losing to eventual Gold medalists BB in two close sets.

Some brief observations from the weekend:
18's - Four Southern CA teams in the semi-finals, and BB was not one of those teams. Pulse beat the two finalists from Nationals in route to a Silver. A tough MB Surf team wins Gold. 17's - BB goes undefeated en route to back-to-back Golds (Nationals & Chi-Town) and are 22-0 in those two tournaments. The #1 and #2 seeds (Rockstar & MB Surf) don't even medal. SCVC enters the tournament as the #19 seed and earns Bronze. MKE Sting and Adversity medal after only having a few practices. Gold medal match close to 5pm. 16's - All four semi-finalists are Southern CA teams with Coast earning a Gold. 15's - Only one Southern CA team in the semi-finals. Rockstar dominates both B2B and BB en route to a Gold.
Should be a great season in most divisions!

South has been practicing since October and played in a few events already (The Point Series). There were some surprise finishes like high performance finishing in bronze and Smash out of Boston finishes as runner up to Bay To Bay. HVA had a really good weekend minus Day 3. But SCVC had a really good run and are much improved from last year. May not be a heavy hitter on paper but they are going to beat teams that people think they aren’t supposed to be. Crazy to think after one major event there are longer any undefeated teams left that are major open teams.

I was primarily on the 17 – Open courts but I watched some 17 - Premier and I am curious whether there was a point of emphasis for the referees in that division to let a lot of doubles go. I am not a purist, and I recognize the game can evolve, but there were a lot of uncalled mishandles in my opinion.

I watched at least 10 games and maybe saw 3 calls and all on middles and opposites. Saw a really bad one by a setter and he basically stopped playing and started laughing when the ref didn't call it.

Not sure what I was looking at to make that error. 3 out of 4 from So Cal. LOL
