For Penn St to win this match they will have to pass much better than their football team.

Unsurprisingly, Penn State likes to start with Mruzik in front left, maximizing her time in the front row. Wisconsin likes to start in Rotation 1, Ashburn serving, putting Dev Robinson positionally front left, defensively front right. That would put Robinson blocking Mruzik and Smrek blocking Camryn Hannah throughout, each pair for three rotations. But of course, UW won't have Smrek. So does Penn State look to get Mruzik matched up hitting against Thomas-Ailara? Or do both coaches, stay with their usual, giving us stronger hitter vs stronger blocker, and (excuse the phrasing) weaker hitter vs weaker blocker? TTA has been doing quite well blocking, so weaker blocker is relative!

If emotion, adrenaline and the home crowd can drive a win, Penn State might win. That said, those factors standing alone aren't going to decide a volleyball match.
The Badgers are a "find a way to win" team, with one glaring exception this season. Penn State can't say the same thing.
Penn State has some big hitters, but the team is hitting .244 overall. Their opponents are hitting .182. The Badgers are .318 / .134. Anna is a big loss, but The Badgers remain formidable with CC and Carter in the middle. The Badgers are a better team as compared to last year; Penn State is not. Badgers in 4. Go Badgers. You might want to remnant CC to not touch the net…

Another fun fact: tonight’s rosters are Transfer City. WisconsinBooth (Minnesota) Boyer (Iowa) Crawford (Kansas) Franklin (Michigan State) Reed (North Carolina) Thomas-Ailara (Northwestern) Penn StateHannah (Clemson) Mruzik (Michigan) Perugini (Coastal Carolina) Podraza (Ohio State) Trammel (Purdue) Van Eekerin (High Point) Weatherington (Utah) I agree. It’s great to see the women have some power to decide where they want to play. It’s great to see the athletes who overperform or who suffer a coaching change or disagreement have the ability to go to a championship contending team. It sure beats the old days when coaches like John Cook, Hugh McCutcheon and a few others would try to lock up 5th and 6th graders only push them out or sit them down because the players had no power.

I would be very impressed if PSU is consistently competitive. Crowd obviously will need to will then to another great start and I think they need Wisconsin to not be on their A game.

If PSU can even win one set I will be impressed. I don't think they will. I think they shot their wad for the Nebraska game and came up short. I doubt they have anything left to give the same kind of effort they gave against Nebraska last week. Also, they have lost three of their last four matches. The losses were all 5-setters. That kind of thing can be demoralizing. My guess is that Wisconsin rolls them in 3 sets. Since I am a Nebraska fan I would love to be wrong though.

PSUs hope is to get on some runs and use the crowd's energy and their own belief to sustain those runs for longer. The loss of Smrek gets them a few advantages on that front.
1. GG is back at libero. GG has been passing well, but now she will be in for 6 rotations. Will she hold up or will she break down in SR, like she did at times last year? PSU will test it.
2. Orzol is at OH. PSU can also try to wear down Orzol in SR to limit her attacking effectiveness. The UW setters have been much better this year in reversing the ball to the RS on less than perfect passes.
3. Despite the overall result. The rotations with MJ setting were a problem last night. Almost the entire point differential occured while Izzy was serving. MJ had a new outside for 2 rotations and a new RS for three. The outside block was a little squirrelly for a bit with Temi and Orzol too. PSU could get runs during those three rotations, or when Orzol, CC and Temi are all in the front row. MD barely even got to them in the first and third sets yesterday.
In UWs favor -- Serve has been good of late. Booth has been been lights out of light, both blocking and hitting. The setters have not been avoiding favoring LS as much as last year. Franklin has been Franklin. Orzol hit very well from the OH position against Maryland - traditionally a good blocking team. Robinson hit really well Friday night and might be back to her best after injury.

badgers pregame:
Sheff Badgers did pretty well transitioning to new roles Friday. Those players have all played those roles before. Tonight will be a definite step up in terms of a challenge. Incoming players. Maile Chan: A lot of a late start in Vball from gymnastics. Knew family for a long time. Playing with pro players in Barcelona. Shumacher: Owned the gym at the camp the last two years. Very well trained and motivated. Van Wie: Good to get a local player, on an upward trajectory. A lefty and good depth at setter.
Dildine What we know about individual players who transferred to PSU may have helped earlier in year, but now they are more a product of the system they have trained in. Mruzik: Has a ton of shots. Block and BR working together will be key. Serve: Much longer place - especially compared to Maryland - takes time to adapt to. They will need to serve tough.
