Last Meeting: Wisconsin won a five-set match in the Sweet 16 in Madison on 12/8/22. Did you know…? On this day 105 years ago, the Allies of the First World War signed an armistice with Germany at Compiègne, France. The cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I was to take effect at eleven in the morning—the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month" of 1918. The war had begun four years earlier when a Bosnian Serb named Gavrilo Princip assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne. It stretched across Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. By the time of the Armistice, casualties were estimated 9 million soldiers dead and 23 million wounded, plus another 5-10 million civilian deaths from various causes, including the Armenian Genocide and the 1918 influenza pandemic. The red poppy is an enduring symbol of WWI, representing the blood shed during battle.November 11 also marks the 105th anniversary of Poland's National Independence Day - Narodowe Święto Niepodległości in Polish. The day commemorates the anniversary of the restoration of Poland's sovereignty as the Second Polish Republic, independent from the German, Austro-Hungarian, and Russian Empires. The holiday was constituted in 1937 and was celebrated only twice before World War II. After the war, the Communist authorities of the People's Republic removed Independence Day from the calendar, though the holiday continued to be celebrated informally. In the 1980s, as the outlawed Solidarity Movement gathered momentum, November 11 became a customary date of demonstrations and marches by opponents of the Communist regime. Typically these marches were brutally dispersed by the communist militarized police forces, with many participants arrested by the security police. As Poland emerged from Communism in 1989, the original holiday was restored. The Polish national anthem, "Mazurek Dąbrowskiego," performed by the Choir and Orchestra of the Grand Theater in Łódź

I think Wisconsin can beat Penn State even without Smrek, but that would be a big loss if it is something medium/long term. They definitely need her for the tournament.

I will take any Badger win in a place where they have 3 wins ever, and I had already bought some antacid tablets before I found out Smrek was out!

I don't really know how to be a proper Penn State fan, but I'll give it a good college try.

I don't really know how to be a proper Penn State fan, but I'll give it a good college try. I felt dirty doing it the other way last weekend, but you don't have the 14-47-1 series history after 3 wins last year in your way!

Unsurprisingly, Penn State likes to start with Mruzik in front left, maximizing her time in the front row. Wisconsin likes to start in Rotation 1, Ashburn serving, putting Dev Robinson positionally front left, defensively front right. That would put Robinson blocking Mruzik and Smrek blocking Camryn Hannah throughout, each pair for three rotations.
But of course, UW won't have Smrek. So does Penn State look to get Mruzik matched up hitting against Thomas-Ailara? Or do both coaches, stay with their usual, giving us stronger hitter vs stronger blocker, and (excuse the phrasing) weaker hitter vs weaker blocker?

I think we’ll see both teams start in their usual rotations for set 1 anyway, as the Badgers’ only hope here is to come out swinging with tough serves and their dominating block. So our first server will be Izzy if we serve first, or Orzoł if we receive (usually our first server in reception is GG subbed in for TTA, but Orzoł is playing that role this weekend, and she can serve for herself).
