UW now officially in the "bottom half" of the 18-team B1G standings.
Two "should-win" matches coming up: Rutgers & Maryland visiting Seattle. Then the sked gets daunting.

UW has a history of recruiting "good" athletes and then training them up to be competitive as a team. Not many were top-tier "national" recruits: Morrison, Rowland, Carlson, Vansant, Powell, etc. I'd lean toward Hunt being one, but the rest are a notch or two below that. None of our current transfers are "game-changers", and only one is starting, for now. One has barely played.
It can be hard to convince "national" recruits or transfers to come all the way up to the Far Corner - they may think it rains all the time or that we're all a bunch of "cowboys" - stereotypes die hard. Powell had to be convinced by her parents to even visit.
That we've come up short, height-wise, against stronger teams is indicative that above 6'3" real available "talent" diminishes significantly with every inch, and is harder to get. Most players drop an inch from their cited HS/Club height when measured with shoes off, but Haury's (5'10") and Hunt's (6'2") remained the same. We have only five players over 6'1", two over 6'2". "Height" is not a guarantee of success, although it does help to put up a "wall", or to hit over one.
I'm not convinced that a far-flung B1G (Central/Eastern) travel schedule will be a "selling point" instead of a "drawback", going forward.
I do like that Leslie has brought the "block" back, which is an area that had languished under Cook. I do hope that Leslie can find more 'gems' or at least "diamonds in the rough" (Kleckner, for '26, from Texas, might be one, although only 6'0", although with close to two more years to grow) - if one comes, others might follow.

If Barton comes back healthy before the tournament, If I were a seeded team, Washington would NOT be a team I'd want in my subregional.

If Barton comes back healthy before the tournament, If I were a seeded team, Washington would NOT be a team I'd want in my subregional. They seem like a classic "dangerous" team. A team that you should beat. A team you probably will beat. But a team that can beat you if you don't take care of business. Minnesota outscored Washington for the night, I see. But the Huskies had 13 aces? Looks like there is at least one set that they won simply because Minnesota couldn't handle Julia Hunt's serve.

I've got to say, Leslie G. has had some serious injury events to adjust to and has found creative solutions that have worked surprisingly well. After dropping the match to USC, where there was minimal practice time to adjust after Barton going down, she 1) switched to the 5-1, 2) moved Bush to hitting left-side, and 3) had Hunt serve instead of Wessels. There were probably other adjustments, but these all were pieces of last night's victory. The lady can coach! (and her team responds).
