Have you seen much of Acevedo? What do you know that makes you think she will start over Hanson? The fact that it was Wucherer and Hanson in the spring? Just curious! I haven't seen a lot from her to be honest but I did see a clip compilation someone put together of her just didn't seem as impressive and explosive as I think Julia is. Plus, Julia has had more time getting experience in the big 10 and with her teammates, so I think she gets the start. Also maybe it was a weird clip, but they posted a clip on instagram of Chloe setting Alex a ball and the swing just looked a little akward. No doubt Alex is a good player I just think that Julia will get the start Not to be Captain Obvious but I'm quite confident that comparing old internet clips of 16/17 year old Alex to a 20 year old Julia probably isn't a well conceived analysis of what's happening in the practice gym at this time. Also eye roll worthy is throwing shade on a swing from a crappy low ball set. Maybe Alex can convince the social media people to not do her dirty like that in the future haha! I do think Julia has an advantage to start being 2 years older and more experienced but I'm hoping Alex gets to play meaningful minutes to work through the normal Freshman ups and downs. This could pay dividends for the Gophers later in the season. The competition in the gym is great for all of them and the fact that this is even a debate is encouraging that the Gophers have some talented youngsters that will be fun to watch develop in the coming years.

Agree with those saying Grote is our best player.
Anyone who knows volleyball can see that she plays with an enigmatic surrealism on the court, akin to the irony of a sea lion.
It pleases me to make these unquestionably positive statements about her play!

The irony she shows on the court would make sea lions cry.
Crowl to right, then?

Crowl to right, then? I don't see that happening. She will take swings there, as she did last year...but she has never been a primary passer. They didn't play her there in spring...just right-side and middle. Grote will be primary right-side and emergency middle. Biggest question mark will be whether she plays all around. I think they will still DS her...but maybe after serve (McGhie DS). Crowl will be primary backup. Shaffmaster will set (guessing Swenson redshirts) Wucherer plays all around. Hanson starts season (Thibault DS). Acevedo pushes for start and primary backup. Zeynep starts libero (Thibault pushes for start). Awoleye and Minatee (primary slide hitter) as middles

No reason to redshirt her, that's an old-fashioned thing that players don't want anyway.

This clearly doesn’t apply “right now” but Keegan commented that he thinks redshirting will become much more common when (assuming) revenue sharing starts to occur. My own opinion is that SS will redshirt, rather than using a year of eligibility to play part time (or worse yet, just “early in the season.”). It is *not* based on anything I have seen or heard from people (i.e. no insider info, just uninformed opinion).

A couple of unknows Sydney Schnichels at 6:4 could certainly be a factor. Along with Kali Engeman at middle. Remember the bar is not all that high.

Keegan commented that he thinks redshirting will become much more common when (assuming) revenue sharing starts to occur. I don't see why that would be true. But he is also one of the few (only?) Big Ten coaches who got it wrong that calling doubles on 2nd contact was bad for the sport. I believe most others (every other one?) got it right that it was better for the sport not to call them. You're entitled to your opinion, of course. It makes no sense to me to leave high school early, train in college all spring, summer, just to redshirt in the fall. No, that's old-fashioned thinking. Kids want to play (and earn) for four years directly out of high school.
That's also a blip because of covid, where players got all these extra years. Playing for four years is correct. Not five. It aligns with completing an undergrad degree in four years, as it's supposed to be. Not five

Well, I guess we’ll know (redshirt) in about 2-3 months.
