Losing by missing hands is much better than losing by sending over a free ball tip.

It was Minnesotas only match point. Oooh, that's what you mean. Gotcha. Yeah, she played pretty well and got a lot of the touches, just missed on that one. Would have loved that for her (and us) I was hoping for it. Lots of moments in the 5th that MN didn’t capitalize on, but it’s a tough environment against a top 10 team. Honestly, expected a sweep. Never happy with a loss, but happy with their level of play.

So in the past week the Gophers have held Nebraska to their second lowest hitting percentage of the year and Wisconsin to their 3rd lowest.
The potential is there for a tournament run.
I have Shaffmaster with 4,925 career assists tying Rachel Hartman for 6th in Gophers history.

Depending where they land, could be a scary team to meet or a blow over

If someone can break down the Wisconsin 6 blocks in set 5 alone that would be great.
It appeared to be a game of the middles again and we were on the losing end this time.

Yes to all those things, we had our chances and I think Shaffs blocked tip will haunt her for awhile. SO CLOSE! also our chances of hosting 2 rounds are gone per Trojan. We needed this win. So sad for Mel. At the risk of coming off like I'm looking too far ahead, Bracketology says weekend 2 would be against Kansas. Julia hitting over Turner... and yes I know Kansas is solid albeit undersized. I respect them. They play clean ball. This post also prompted me to look at the updates and is how I learn Creighton might have a regional? Would kinda love that for them! If you look at the first post the last bracket involved some *choices*. It's not likely that's the final bracket, alas.

I just have to say, I was absolutely impressed with the Gophers last night. They nearly gave me a heart attack, and at no point did I feel comfortable that the Badgers were going to pull it out.
Your defense was crazy good, your serving gave us fits at the beginning, and the idea to tip all the balls to Charlie made it VERY difficult for us to be in system.
I know it sucks to lose such a close one but you should be very proud of the way the ladies played. I think their play last night would have taken down PSU and Purdue (but not at the same time 🤣)

I can't remember how our passing was to see if there were more setting options those last few points. I think fatigue was the main factor in it all, they gave their all and it showed.

Yeah I guess this is what I was hoping someone could do. The passing and then setting choices because the rest of the match was corrections by both teams. It appeared Wisconsin broke us down and we just didn't have a comeback at that time.

Obviously wanted a win but I’m not upset with that loss, lots and lots of good things to be proud of. Remove a couple missed serves or communication errors and it’s a different outcome, they certainly outplayed Wisco in most aspects… play like that in December and they pull off a couple upsets.
The bench support and communication between players (especially after Wuchs and Hanson collided) was also really nice to see. That’s a direct result of instilling a positive culture

Tight net passes with hitters not named Hanson and Wucherer scrambling to get out of Mel's way makes for a simple target to camp on. Tbf, I expect that out of a fifth set going extra, just weird %*$# that would've been more crisp in the first three sets.

Alex has proven herself to steady the backrow. It felt like Wuch was passing more when she was in frontrow. I didn't pay enough attention to see what the stacks were, but it was exploited.

Iowa at home Saturday and does KCook rest Wucherer and play Avecedo 6R?
In all honesty, I just have this gut feeling if he does do that we could be losing a set and then going into panic mode and trying to win the match while having to play another say 5 setter.
We need a healthy OH who can play 6R while effectively digging, passing, serving, blocking and able to put the ball down or switch up their hits or hit high hands....that's all. Right now we have that in two players or 1 1/2 players.

“runs home to mama” The Hunt for Red October:
“You see, sir, the SAPS software was originally written to look for seismic events. And I think when it gets confused, it kind of runs home to mama”.
that's Shaff and the missing middle attack (sigh)
I'm curious what an upset last night would have done to our RPI? We still would have had a host of H2H losses against the other bubble host hopefuls for the last 1 or possibly 2 slots.
Based on the trajectory of our recent losses to Neb & Wi I can see, best case scenario, that MN will make it to a regional final before getting ousted by a top seed.
This is doable but will require a more balanced attack, no more undersetting Phoebe, keeping sets more than 2-3' from the net, giving Grote a few D balls in her serving rotation, and forcing opponent's MB to, at least, consider our MBs, before clamping down on Hanson or Wookie.
How far do you think MN can go in next month's tourney?
