Gilk is a lefty, and am pretty sure will be the 4 year 6 rotation Opp that MN fans will love.Ā Sheās still got plenty of developmental work to do hitting-wise to put herself in a position to do so. Iād bank on her being an all around player for the Gophers at some point but my money wouldnāt be on it being right away. Looking at more of a year 2, year 3 type situation.

I am new to volleyball and read these comments to learn more. Why is a lefty seemingly disfavored?

Ok then, not sure why I thought that. Is Gilk a lefty? Yes Gilk is a lefty but apparently plays both OH and RS very well. A good passer too I heard.

Nobody talks about the setting backup that will be needed definitely starting 2025. IDK if NG is still around that season or not However, seeing as we have never had the opportunity to see her set in a match, I would think this coaching staff needs to be looking into that.
Right now many top 2025 setters have committed, but we will be in need of another setter that season. Look what happened at Florida this year. We will need someone who is willing to be a backup for Stella and can take over the starting position should something happen to Stella. Another reminder....unfortunately, when we used our backup setter this season we did not come up with the results we should have.
I'm sure this has been mentioned and discussed several times but when exactly does the portal open and for how long of a window?

Here's some highlights of Gilk on her Hudl. The setting at Champlin Park isnt great... so it's tough to judge her from HS matches. I'm assuming she'll play MN Select again this year. Another very dynamic and smart player to look forward to. Looks like she has good court vision www.hudl.com/v/2LChny

Honestly, no one good is going to want to sit for a few years anyway. However, there are still a couple exceptional 2024ās that have been waiting for this exact moment, given the challenges with COVID years, portal and grad student movement. Not sure, if the coaching staff knows about them but it will be interesting to see an add to at least level up the competition as it relates to setting.

I am new to volleyball and read these comments to learn more. Why is a lefty seemingly disfavored? A left-handed hitter playing left side (OH) is hitting the ball after it has crossed her body, and is close(r) to the antenna. She also needs the setter to adjust to her different needs, as far as ball position goes. In, um, 2005 ( no, I donāt remember silly useless trivia) Tennessee had *two* OH players who were both lefties, making it easier on their setter, and making life *harder* for the opponents trying to block her. (That last is a *benefit* of having lefties in your OH spots.) A left-handed *setter* on the other hand, is favored, because when she gets a good pass, she will be facing to the left, which puts her left hand further from the net, allowing her to dump the ball with her dominant hand. Similarly, a left-handed Opposite (right side) hitter is usually a good thing, for the same reasons a right-handed left side hitter is preferred. And since thereāll only be one Opposite on court, thereās less in-game adjustment needed by the setter.

Didn't Snichels redshirt?Ā Ā I think she is but was it ever confirmed? We likely wonāt know until the roster is updated this spring. If she didnāt play, she gets a red shirt. If thatās simple.

She played in the spring, but that āseasonā (really, her ā0thā year) does not count against eligibility. Since she didnāt play at all in the fall, they donāt need to apply for a medical redshirtā¦ itās just the extra year that everyone has available. I donāt know if itāll impact scholarships, but that would be a question/issue when it comes up 3-1/2 years from now.

I'm interested in the Schnickels/Gilk comparison. Who do people think will ultimately end up being the better right side? Sydney is two years ahead of Gilk but will only be one year ahead of her in eligibility. Even if Gilk then took a redshirt, she'd still have to wait two years to potentially start over Sydney (if Sydney won the starting spot and was good enough to keep it).

Iāve seen Gilk play a bit and she has an athleticism, court vision, and IQ beyond her age. I think she is going to be something special for the gophers.

So Hansonās Dinkytown Athletes post on instagram is deleted. Along with her post and the comments, Iām pretty convinced she is transferring. Really liked her, but donāt blame her.
