No big transfers would want to play for assistant coaches like Costello and Baxter, compared to coach Ang. Hawaii’s main issue is recruiting. I agree with your observation. During Shoji's era, the assistant coaches were indeed more prominent and proactive in recruiting efforts. They played a significant role in bringing in high-caliber talent, which is essential for building a competitive team. The current assistant coaches, such as Costello and Baxter, may not have the same reputation or aggressiveness in recruiting, which can be a deterrent for big transfers who are looking for strong leadership and assurance. Coach Angelica, on the other hand, has a more established presence (AVCA POY in 1996) that likely appeals to top recruits. It's clear that Hawaii's main issue is indeed in recruiting, and addressing this by perhaps bringing in more dynamic and well-connected assistant coaches could be a vital step towards revitalizing the program.

Scott Wong was one of those assistants, he's still bringing in good talent at Pepperdine

Im not that sure that big time assistants will make much of a difference. I think when UH goes out and recruit kids, they sell the program. Coaches come and go. It’s the program that should attract kids to come.
I just think our recruiting philosophy is different in that we don’t BS and beat around the bushes and pamper them on official visits and then turn around and chew their asses off during practices. It will make the players wonder what happened to all that lovey dovey feelings during the recruiting trips. They know what they will get from day one.
There is no doubt that UH coaches look more for “fits” so that limit their prospective pool of players.

Back when the Wahine were a national powerhouse, we had high caliber assistants, a legendary HC, and a solid recruiting network. You need all three to make a run at the NC. You look at our Men's VB program today and they've got all the boxes checked including a solid track record these past few seasons. Wade's assistant coaches have done a commendable job bringing in top shelf recruits which continue to flow in largely due to the efforts of assistant Coaches' Kupono and Milan who are active on social media and via active scouting. You look at what the Men have coming thru the doors in the next 2-3 years and wow! These guys are on it! We just don't get that same feeling with the Women's side where they struggle to complete their next season's class much less 2-3 years out. It's damn near impossible to elevate a program without the necessary means to bring in high caliber recruits which is the lifeblood of any successful sports program. I am happy with how we recruited locally this year but stateside and internationally, not so much.

Robin's competition for recruits is exponentially greater. Even when Dave was coaching, the number of teams that were cranking in huge money was significantly less than it is today. With the exception of a few outliers, the P4 conferences with all their TV dollars will dominate in all sports.

Regarding assistants (and Robyn too), I wish they took a more active role in USA Volleyball. This would give them one on one time with the high school athletes that are highly sought after.

Someone mentioned Paula was headed for University of Miami. They are loaded with freshmen and sophomores and I think its a good move for her since she will be the most experienced of all the players on the roster and will get the volume of sets she probably wanted at UH but wasn't going to get. She probably wanted to be a "go to" player and put up big numbers more than being on a high level team playing in a high level atmosphere. She did mentioned that she wanted to play at UH because of the crowd and the atmosphere. I guess she had a change of heart. Someone mentioned Miami draws in the range of 600 per match so big crowds is a non issue for her now.

They're all used to the Power 4 level of play and Paula is not. Not a great move on her part unless she's pursuing something outside of playing time. Paula doesn't have the opportunity to play sand either.

She may have been a pretty good sand player in her younger years but I don’t think one can take a few years off and then think she can play at a high level. Well…whatever Paula was looking for, she was not getting it in Hawaii so she decided to go elsewhere. Maybe Miami was the best of all the offers and she took it. Most high ranked teams are not going to take in a one year only part time starter when they could use the scholarship for a more impactful player. Good luck to her. UH will be fine and will continue to chase the BW title without her. I predict Tali and Stella will step up and make up for Paula’s absence.

I'd take it a step further and say that many recruits probably don't know who the current professionals are!

I hate to say it, but I have been feeling like the lack of a true assistant coach has been hurting UH.
They were fortunate enough to have some great assistants in the past (Reyes, Wade, Wong, Ljunquist) that played pivotal roles in landing their marquee players.
I can't help but think that is the reason they have yet to have a true go-to undr Ah Mow's tenure. I wonder why they haven't upgraded the position since Ljunquist left.
Between the alums that have since retired (Hartong, Mitchem, Danielson, Bown, Taylor) I would think someone would have found someone to fill that role.
