As for mindset, you have to start somewhere even if you aspire to win championships. I was thinking more along the lines of the Nebraska beach team model, at least to begin with. Anyway I’m pretty sure most of Texas’s beach volleyball team is currently taken from their indoor roster. Currently the Texas beach roster has 10 players and they are all full time beach. I believe all of them are transfers as we didn't hire the Beach HC until late spring (May?) after the 2023 beach season ended so he didn't have a chance to recruit freshman for this year's team. Almost all of the transfers are from Texas and many from the Austin area. Primary motivation for adding beach at this time was Title IX. Women as a % of the student population at Texas has increased significantly in the last few years which increased the # of women athletes needed to be in compliance. Our AD has mentioned that likely we will need to add a total of five women's sports to get back into compliance. Wow. Five? That's a lot! How big has been the demo shift?

If more B1G teams joined SAND VB -- we could field a competitive conference.
With UCLA, USC, Washington, and Oregon already having teams -- maybe add 4-5 more from the original B1G..... I can see Nebraska, Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, and Northwestern able to field teams with their indoor fieldhouses/space available.
Make all the spring matches in L.A. ++ for everyone. February teams go down to Florida region, March TX/SW region, April SoCal.... May in Alabama.

I hope we don't get Batenhorst now that she's in the portal now that Landfair joined Failmantle Dockers (whoops wrong forum) aka Nebraska.
But if we do get her then she'll likely replace TTA's role and keep Julia at Libero which isn't ideal for me at least. We need Julia at OH2 and I saw someone posted that Julia has a better hitting percentage than Batenhorst, plus she blocks well despite being shorter and we all know that she's a superior defender and passer to the point that she played Libero. I have a feeling that Batenhorst will disappoint us similarly to how TTA played earlier in the season but I do think she maybe an upgrade on TTA and I also wouldn't be surprised if she plays better than TTA did.
If she want to play 6ro then the can put a line through the Badgers.

At Texas, 57% female. FYI at Wisconsin, 53% female. Nebraska 50% female. Title IX works as described. Wisconsin beach volleyball suddenly doesn’t seem so far fetched.

If she want to play 6ro then the can put a line through the Badgers. I just don't see having Orzol playing front row as conducive to a title for Wisconsin. If Batenhorst is available, Kelly should snatch her up. Then grab a great libero from the portal too. That libero, GG and Orzol can duke it out for playing time in the back row. Orzol could be good sub for whomever takes L2. From my view, WI is in that now even smaller echelon of teams that could contend for a title in the next couple of years. Simple strategy for all those teams: serve tough, assemble an exceptional back court, have a great setter. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Offense is easy. I realize that this could then be an argument for having Orzol play front row--that as long as the back court is solid, pretty much any D1 hitter should be able to put the ball away consistently. But in this ever-increasing game of inches, if I were a coach with an outside hitter on championship point hitting with no block up, I'd choose Batenhorst over Orzol 99% of the time. Edit: Two things I'm confused about with Batenhorst's portal announcement that I'm too lazy to search: 1. I thought the portal closed for this first round on Jan 1? 2. Did I read that she wants to play beach? Does WI even have a beach team?

Does WI even have a beach team? - Batenhorst is entering the portal as a grad transfer; grad transfers can enter outside of the one-time undergrad 'window'. - Yes, she has said she wants to play beach as well as indoor. No, Wisconsin doesn't have a beach team. - The one and only national title that Wisconsin has won was won with Orzol playing front row. They've also won two B1G titles with Orzol playing front row.

I think it’s good to make beach volleyball different from indoor, more like an eclectic “new” sport to appeal to a different demographic.

Without searching to find the exact numbers, my memory is that the numbers published were from around 52% to around 58%. Don't remember the exact year each number represented. The shift was significant and very surprising. Just to be clear, beach volleyball is the first of the five to be added.

I looked at some Texas beach results from 2023 and saw their indoor team players as the pairs who played. All the more reason to get in on it now, while even Texas is new to it. Spring 2023 was the first beach season. IIRC it wasn't announced until the summer of 2022. They decided to start in spring 2023 with the indoor players comprising the beach team similar to Nebraska, but then move to a standalone beach team (with beach only players) in 2024.
